Six months ago, snys an Eastern exchange of n recent date, we published an article on the growing of this crop. A few hints about preserving it will now be timely. Potatoes, us every one knows, nre \‘ery pnlntive and very nutritive, but in autumn become less so as the season advances. ln deed, us they are generally kept, they lose so much of their pleasing taste and nutri tiveness by May, that few Would make use of them were it not that they have become it sort of household dependence, so that we prefer those in a bad condition to none. The American Agriculturist says: “A liberal amount of earth collected with them is rather beneficial than othcrwise in their preservation." Oddly its the above may sound in the ears of some, it is strictly true. Taking it as a sort of test. but allowing ourselves the usual liberty of departure or aocomo dation’a sake, we propose to discourse, at oxactl this mach, on the anaemia! condi tions Ihr the preservation of the potato in something like its original goodness. Supposing, then. that we have potatoes of adesirable quality—not your wet, soggy thintfs, grown on land containing little or no a kali, and therefore fined for nothinint first, and hordl wort preserving; ut those grown on l’t'md rich in lime nnd pot ash. or madcso by special mnnuring for‘ this crop, what is to be done to preserve those qualities which rendered t cm the praise of all palates in October, till June of the following year? Ever Lone must have noticed that if n potato lclt in thehill over winter-and than plowed out in the next May, it fia ceases precisely the same qualities it d the previous October—hes undergone no change whatever, but Is as dry. lovely, and ready to crack open in boiling as ever. Now,let us see wll this is so: The sun’s warmth, air and fight are essential conditions for growing the potato and bringing it to perfect maturity; but these same forces, f allowed stil to operate, carry it on beyond maturity, that is, to de “in. excellence of the ripe tuber conststs initsstareh. Treating and Flavoring Tobacco. in Richmond, which has been the host]- quarters of the tobacco business, there are ver extensive Innnufuctories where the ‘ ieniyis cured, and afterwards made into ‘ plugs for chewing. Great cure and mom , tion are necessary to the proper curing of 1 it, and if the weather is moist during the l o eration, it is very liable to mildew. ln efiar weather it is spread on the mp of sheds, and hung in every situation where it can be exposed to the dry air. The sky ‘ is watched with anxiety during such expo- ‘ sure, so that it may not receive a drop of rain. Very frequently it receives the mal drying in warm apartments, and in mnny cases these are heated with open fires— dry eorncobs being about the best fuel that can be used. Pine and other Wood impart their resinous taste to the tobacco, if the smoke is permitted to permeate through the leaves. After the tobacco is perfectly cured, it is prepared ior pressing. it is new s common practice to lever it with some mixture of sweet and mmtielci‘iiszctpr“ A vs: y ‘ common rs on s o c as besn. vhrehm plesssnt odor. mils , ls siso used, end (Ith msnufleturers hove their spools] mixtures.
