IWINTEE BASEBALL FROM THE INSIDE "What constitutes team work," 1» a question often asked of any one directly connected with the playing end of base ball. The fans are constantly reminded that this feature of a clubs play Is one of the most important essen tials In its success. Naturally they wonder what really constitutes team play, and hence, the reason the question Is so often asked. Team work Is nothing more than a perfect un derstanding between all the mem bers of a club as to what Is to be done on a particular play. For instance: There is a man on first with but one out. If the runner decides to try for second he first Imparts this information to the batter so the man at the plate can in any legitimate way help him reach the base in safe ty. Or vice versa. If the man at the bat doesn't know what the base runner is go ing to do, it can readily be seen that his chance to help the run ner advance is not near as good as If he were aware of the inten tion. This same theory applies to every play, when two or more men are connected with the play. We will say that with a man on first the guardian of the sack de cides there la a chance to catch the runner napping. The first sacker accordingly signals the catcher to throw to him there on the next ball pitch ed. For the backstop to be sure that his end of the play is to be made right, he must let the pitch er know what he is going to do, so the box artist can hand the ball wide of the plate, that the batter will not have a chance to hit at the ball and spoil the attempted play. Any number of plays of this nature might be cited, but they all come back to the fundamental point of a thorough understand ing between the players. When this understanding is not thorough it certainly works havoc with team play. With a man on first and one out, the hit and run Is attempted. The batter decides on this play and gives the signal. He takes it for granted the man at first Is going down on the next ball pitched and to help him swings at the ball, no matter where it is. If, instead of the base runner | starting for second, he remains i glued to the bag because he has missed the sign, the man at bat goes through with his end for nothing. When he see* that the base runner is still on first his con fidence is shaken and he is afraid to give the signal for fear the run ner will miss it again. A play of this kind may easily lone the game and It emphasizes the importance of an understand ing between every member of the club. It the team expects to be {contender for the championship honors. Schommer, [ Captain Chicago University Basket ...-■.■.: .'■_■• Ball Team. ", - r • Every basket ball team should have a number of plays that work by signal. The right forward then tries for a goal, or If closely guarded, passes to the center, who Immedi ately after the Jump covers the po sition vacated by the right forward and is therefore in a position to re ceive the pass and try for goal. The left forward, after passing the ball, sprints to take a posi tion in front of the basket. The men are well placed in case the goal is missed and the ball re bounds. The center is on the right side of the basket, left forward in front of it, and right forward on the left side. In case the opposite center gets the jump tha guards must get the ball and complete the play. * The same play is used on the opposite side, "right forward to left forward In right forward's po sition." The center bats the. ball to his right, whare the right for ward gets it and passes it to the left forward, who crosses and then tries for a goal or passes to the center for a try. The three men cover the basket Our new automatic pool tables have ar rived. PRINCE'S for the rebound, only the center is now on the left Bide of the basket, the right forward in front and the left forward on the right side. The system of signals may be either words, numbers or gestures. Such familiar phrases as "come on" or "play hard" or "right at them" may be used to designate certain formations. Numbers or letters may be used instead of the phrases alluded to, or gestures may be used. A team ought to have its best formations, by which I mean those that work the best, designat ed by gestures, or, as they are call ed, "silent slpnals." The advantage of this Is plain. Where an audience is yelling, to call out signals would be useless. because none would be heard Therefore to overcome this diffi culty a team must resort to ges tur"<! or "silent Hfsrnals." These may consist of raising the left hand and tnen the right, 0) both. Then, to increase th< number of gestures to cover th' different plays, the hands may l>. clenched, or one or two fingers and so on, held up. The next article will be a fur ther discussion of the strategy o! the game, and plays involving th< guards will be given.
