TROOPS CHARGE
ON STRIKERS
NONE HURT
(By United Press Leased Wire.)
ILASCO, Mo., May 18.—Weary
from their 24-hour vigil, the two
companies of the Missouri state
militia, trying to hold in check
2,100 striking employes of - the
Atlas Portland Cement company,
must be reinforced or further
trouble may result.
Since their arrival yesterday
morning the .guardsmen, have
been unable to sleep. One of the
companies was fired upon by men
bidden in a dense patch of brush.
The guardsmen returned the fire
and charged into the brush. None
of the soldiers was hurt.
The commanding officers of
the two companies here last even
ing wired to Jefferson City,, for
more troops. It was expected
that companies at Columbia,
Trenton and Unionville would be
here before night.
WILL ASK COUNCIL
TO PROHIBIT
FIREWORKS
If the New England society can
stop it there will be no fireworks
in Tacoma on the Fourth, unless
by official order of the council in
a public demonstration. Petitions
are out and the society started a
movement last night for a "safe
and sane" fourth that will put an
end to the tragedies and de
struction of the noisy, fire-spread
ing sort and try to instill in the
youthful mind the real purport of
Independence day.
Next Monday petitions will be,
filed with the council asking for
the passage of the Cleveland ordi
nance which prohibits the shoot
ing of fireworks or keeping them
for sale.
j. The New England society also
last night appointed a committee
to arrange for a great Bunker Hill
picnic at Point Defiance park
June 17.
CITY GETS LAND
FROM HAGEMAN
FOR SUOO
Fred Hageman yesterday signed
up a contract for the Bale of his
land at the Green river intake to
the city for $1,000. When he
came to town he was inclined to
try to back out on the deal, but
Commissioner Lawson took him
on an auto ride, showed him the
South Tacoma water station, and
then Hageman put his name to a
contract, to sell the land to Law
son. . Lawson will later transfer it
to the city.
