Today It will be the Or phans against Vancouver. It did not make any difference whether Tacoma lost the franchise or not to the players. The fact that they were losing their home only seemed to Inspire them to greater effort yesterday and today, now that they have become the Or phans, without home and undre the step-parentage of the league, the Orphans are getting ready to repeat the performance this aft ernoon. Criger pitched a great shutout game, only allowing /our scatter ed hits to the Beavers. A pass and two hits In the fifth was the best the Beavers could do but Criger steadied and the other Orphans came to the rescue. Ab bott, Neighbors and Cameron were the heavy stick artists, get ting two hits each. Morse was the only man who did not get a hit. There was a conspicuous absence of errors. The Orphans played practically perfect base ball. The score: flflfl Here* ■■ «cepdona!!y good cigarette—full flavor, yet mild—delU' '- ' ■■ P«*e Turkish fragrance. Franchise Lost To Tacoma By Action of A. E. Rothermel Tacoma was dropped from the Northwestern league yesterday afternoon 'by the league directors. When the league refused to ac cept President Kothermel's offer to pay him $3 500 for the fran chise and assume $4500 liabili ties, it is said, the matter was taken out of his hands. The directors offered to heturn his $1000 forfeit fee and assume the liabilities, and drew up an agreement, giving him until June to adjust his finances. Rothermel first accepted this offer, then changed his mind, so the franchise is gone. The Tacoma schedule will now be abandoned, and Seattle and Victoria will have continuance baseball. AH" deals for players., especially those for the sale of Schmutz and Gordon are called The team is taken over by the league, which will place it in some other city. The decision was reached after an all day session at the Tacoma hotel, with all the directors present. The final decisive resolution follows: "Whereas, for business reasons It has become necessary to drop Tacoma from the Northwestern league, the league being unable to get assurances that the pres ent management can or will main tain the club, the president of the league is hereby authorized to place said team Jn such city aa appears to be in the beet interest of said league." North Yakima, Everett and Bal lard are spoken of for the team, but President Jones said he had no idea where the team would go. "But it will be kept together," he said. "Selling off the best Club Smoker Tonight Will Be Whirlwind Entertainment Tonight the Tacoma Athletic club will hold what promises to be the most successful smoker since its organisation. From the opening bout between Joe Hill and George Smith in four rounds until the decision in the main event be tween Paul Steele and Eddie Ma rino, there will not be a dull mo ment and strength and science will be combined in a whirlwind of entertainment. While there has been some complaint, the majority of tne club members are highly pleased with the action of the trustees In dividing the membership into three divisions which permits of reserved seats. Rotliermel To Blame. The losa of the baseball fran chise and team to Tacoma is di rectly attributable, the league di rectors say, to the stuibbornesg of Rothermel. Not only did the league direc tors offer him ewery chance to raise money and make good but also offered him his $1,000 for feit and to pay the liabilities of the club that It might be taken over by other Tacoma people. Rotbermel refused to accept unless Ed. N. Watkina, the only Tacoman to come forward, was not to receive the clnb. Not Lost Vet. The franchise, however, is not entirely lost to Tacoma. It Is for sale now to the hlghestt bid der. Tacomans may get the franchise back and keep the club here by making the first bid. The action must be decisive be fore some other town gobbles up the privilege. Whoever gets the franchise and club will get it free of encumberances. The league will pay off all d«bts and the back salaries of the players. To finance the deal would take at least $ 10,000 cash to operate the club on a successful financial basis through at least another year aud perhaps two. The players are estimated to be worth over $10,000. Several of them are wanted by the major leagues who are willing to pay a good price. By judicious hand-; ling the team could be made to pay for itself within a few years and leave a good clean profit. house tonight, as In any fraternal or other organization.
