Tuesday, May 28, 1912. NEEDLESS SACRIFICE OF LIFE SAYS SMITH (By United Press Leased Wire.) WASHINGTON, D. C, May 28. ■—Teeming with eloquence, com bining praise for heroism and scathing rebuke for negligence and cowardice of the moat appal line marine disaster of history, was the final and official requiem today in the senate for the victims of the Titanic. Senator Smith summed up the evidence. That every boul aboard the ■giant steamship might have been saved but for the indifference, al most criminal neglect of Captain Slanley Lord and the other offi cers of the Callfornlan, was the most startling charge Smith bit terly made. "Needless sacrifice" of at least 600 lives because the'"strangely insufficient number of lifeboats" were not filled, was also charged. "Obsolete and antiquated ship ping laws," and "laxity of regu liiiiiiM and hasty inspection," by the British 'board of trade were denounced by Smith. As a con tributory cause he named the in difference of Capt. Smith of the Titanic for ignoring the iceberg warning and forcing the Titanic at full speed. Capt. Smith ex plated his offense by a heroic death. Praises Wireless Men. Lack of discipline and cowar dice of some of teh crew was scathingly arraigned. To the two Titanic wireless operators, Phil lips and Bride, the senator paid a glowing tribute. He lauded Captain Rostron, of the rescue ship Carpathla. Not a word of criticism for J. Bruce Ismay, managing director of the White Star line, was ut tered. He caustically criticised the White Star line for withhold ing news of the disaster. Rebuke for those In half filled lifeboats who stood by and refus ed aid to struggling, drowning Ewimmers until "all noise had ceased" was voiced. Jackson, a white chef, start ed an argument yesterday with J. Jackson, a colored waiter, in the Olympian diner of the C. M. & P. 3. The colored Mr. Jack son became enraged and, grab bing a butcher knife, stabbed the chef several times. Before any one realized exactly what had occurred, the waiter had vanished. RITZVILLE, May 28. — Otto Case spoke to a big meeting last night In his gubernatorial cam paign, demanding bettor salaries for working girls with a minimum wage law and the loaning of the state surplus 'to citizens on first mortgage farm property to aid development. He demanded taxation on the big land holdings in the state to make the land grabbers let go, and boosted state aid for irrigation. Bridge Knocked Out Of Plumb The big 11th street bridge was knocked crooked this morning, and unless 'the inspectors demand the taking down of quite a large section of the work already up, the bridge will always be warped and weakened. Falsework of heavy sills had been constructed on Cliff avenue over which the bridge structure was erected. This morning the work was completed and the men knocked the heavy false work down as the easiest way of re moving it. The heavy timbers fell with a crash against the uprights at the side of the street and bent two of them over an inch out of plumb. It remains to be seen whether, the Inspector will compel the placing of straight piers in their stead. HUBBY WORTH $20,000. Lulu L. Dingle, widow of Al bert J. Dingle, has sued the Pa cific & Eastern railway for $20, --000 damages for the loss of her husband. He was killed on the logging road of the company last September just before the worfc ingmen's compensation law went into effect, while working as an engineers on the r.oad.
