Hla production yesterday of the Hartley Manners' comedy, "The House Next Door," was In every way better thau the road company's play, which came to the Tacoma theater two years ■go. It is some praise, to say that a stock company has out rivaled a traveling company di rect from Broadway, New York city. "The House Next Door" needs Bo introduction. It has been Tead In story form by thousands. It Is the tale of racial prejudice —an Englishman's hatred of a Jew neighbor. The son of one family falls In love with the daughter of the other, and the English father's emotion is so great that he would rather see the happinesa of his offspring sacrificed than countenance a marriage. He later learns that the Jew has done blni unknown favors throughout his life, aud that he Is financially and mor ally his debtor. Tlie play enu> happily. Although possessing dramatic climaxes, "The House Next Door" is built on comedy lines, and there are many situa tions that bring out good healthy laughs. The company Is admirably cast, Norman Hackett appearing in the role of the Kngllah father, and Miss Phoebe Hunt In the character of hla daughter. CITY WILL SELL COPPER AS JUNK Taking advantage of the pres ent high price of copper, the city light department will junk a large quantity of obsolete elec trical apparatus stored In the 19th street power house. Famous Actor With Whiteside Leonard Mudie, who la this season appearing as Llndlner, the dissolute Herman arttat in Walker Whltealde's fine produc tion of "Tlie Typhoon," which comes to the Tacoma theater next Tuesday for two nights, has scored heavily in this exacting role. THKY HAVB STHKXtJTH TO STA.M). A harder working crew doesn't live, but—. THKY ARK THKIK OWN'j UOSS. THKY SHARE THE PROFITS OK THE HAUL. AND THKY NEKD NKVRR 81l OUT OF WORK FOR IX)NG, Therein lies the secret of their exiiKiition, though their dally j stunt Is often 20 hours in the dory and the icing pens. These modern Vikings makel their own conditions, largely, i And they stick with the trawls I lifetime, or until the perils of their calling pull them down. Hum Are at Work More than 4000 of them range: the .Northwest banks, from thei Columbia to Kodiak, -supplying; II per cent of all the halibut | used in the United States. The commercial side of the in dustry is told in market reports —65,(100,000 pounds taken dur ing Hi] 5, with a return of near $4,000,000 to the men and the vessel owners from the dealers. But pounds nnd dollar marks don't tell the story. The classic of the halibut is written at sea, in dangers and wrecks; in titanic labors; In hero i'un never chronicled, and in the wonderful team spirit of the 4 000 he-men who hundle the trawls. Bower Replaces Bulls Power schooners have taken the place of the Yankee Ball on the Pacific. And power has set a terrific pace among the halibut catchers. Each vessel carries from four to ten dories, from which the men, two to every boat, heave the long, many-hooked trawl lines and lift them again. Nets, spread In the dories, when filled with fish are hove aboard the schooner with a winch. From 4 o'clock In the morning until past midnight, when on the banks, tlie dorymen do not rest, save for the call of the cook. The small boats are dropped over side while the schooner la under way, and are picked up again at dark in the same way. The day's catch is eviscerated and packed in ice in the vessel's hold after the men come aboard at night. Three Hours' Sleep For perhaps three hours they sleep like dead men, without even removing their boots. Then the cook's gong again—the cook who is master of the fo-caatle. Until the schooner's fish bunk ers are filled—from four to fottr teen days—this terrific pace •?» kept up by the men WITHOUT BEING DRIVEN. FOCR-FIFTHS OF THE EN TIRE CATCH COES TO THE FISHERMEN, THE REMAINDER TO THE VESSEL'S OWNER. The crew pays all expenses of the trip, in the independent schooners, and divides the residue in equal shares. That, with youth and health and the viking spirit, is moment um enough. It ia no berth for a shirker or a weakling. A drone ia a dividend reducer, robbing hla doryroates. Not Lacking In Peril The best halibut banks He up against the Alaskan coast, where storms break furiously; where fog and reef and ley waters apell const ant peril. Sometimes six dories go over side In the morning, and but five are picked up at night. Where or how the ill-fated boat with ita two men has disappeared no man will ever know. The halibut men expect that, accepting it with fatalistic calm. Without these dangers, the men tell me, they would find the life! too tame. It's chance and the tin-! known that lure them. And the fellow who hesitates or whimpers is a shame to hlg crew. He's not of the halibut clan. And next trip another sits in his dory.
