PAGE FOUR EDITORIALS About This Rate Business A representative of tbe interstate commerce commission from Washing ton, 1). ('., is in Seattle today to take testimony in tho fight of the combined cities and commercial organisations ot the Northwest, baa-dag the Washing ton state public service commissioners, against the Southern Pacific and al lied lines for abolishing of a rate differential which is keeping tourists away from this corner of the nation. If the interstate commerce eommistion decides this case in favor of the plaintiff, it is going to mean a l»>t to tht 1 Northwest. It is going to mean that several thousand Easterners who visit the coast annually without seeing the Northwest, befailM to do so would cost them more money, arc going to drop in on us during the summers to come. It is going to mean that a lot of money that now is getting away from Ui — hundreds of thousands of dollars yearly—is going to be spent in Tacoma. Se attle and other Northwest cities. And whj I Because the Tacoma Times. The Seattle Star, and the ,Seripps papers in Spokane and Portland took up the fight at the request of Chairman Reynolds, of the state public service commission, when other paper, were admittedly afraid to —when inininercial organizations had permitted the matter to be shelved —when it seemed that every one stood in such wholesome fear of the railroads, and their money, and their influence, that the Northwest was goiug to go right on taking the little end ol' the tourist business without even a peep of protest. I Others quickly became interested. Mass meetings were he-Id. Public sen timent was crystallised. The commercial bodies were brought into line. In an incredibly thort time all cities of the Northwest were in the fight, shoulder t<> shoulder. Now that the first skirmish has been fought, The Times wants to tells its appreciation of the willingness with which the workers took hold when this newspaper sounded the rallying cry. But this is not the time to stop fighting; this is the time to "drive" the hardest. A few nuny smashing blows and the battle will be won. It will be a victory that will bring a greatly augmented prosperity to this whole region, as well as a belated justice. A Masterpiece In 400 Words President Wilson's latest note to Germany, sent yesterday In reply to the kaiser's sarcastic but yielding message of last Thursday, is thoroughly admir able. it accepts jus, enough and repudiates just enough of the German answer to our ultimatum. It takes at its lace value the German promises as to the future conduct of submarine warfare without minimizing one particle the repugnance 1 liis coun try feels for Germany's past course. And it is very firm in its statement thai our treatment by Germany is not to be permitted to be made contingent in any way on our relations with any third nation. If you haven't read President Wilson's note carefully, you have missed a diplomatic masterpiece. And it is handled in 400 words! Ignore Is the Word The tpiaint morning organ of the O. 0. P. calls attention to the fact that Senator Poindexter sent no message of greeting or otherwise to the recent -North Yakima republican convention. It then runs on as follows: "How is it to be explained | Was it an oversight on his parti That seems improbable. Unquestionably he knew the state convention was to be held and knew the date of it. lie ignored the convention entirely." Undoubtedly, brother, the senator did just that. We've noticed a great many other persons in this state that are equally little concerned over what Baniuiyperkins and his hand-picked committee did over there. Ignoring it Seems <piite the rule. W. H. Paulhamus 9 Proposal W. 11. Paulhamuf) made an interesting suggestion in a letter to the editor, printed in The Times yesterday, lie proposed that a series of meetings be failed by the Commercial club, one for each industry, and that the needs of each industry be threshed out whole-heartedly. This done, he argues, the club and people generally would be in a posi tion to adopt a course which would effectively build up those various home in dustries.
