JACK THE GIANT-KILLER [.DOIT MIND THAT Gi! 1 Tacoma Graduates: There is a whole lot of meat in this drawing hv the great cartoon ist Satterfield. It is quite true, as he so aptly depicts it, that the world looks with a quintal grin on your exit from school and your entry into the j bigger events of life. I The world likes to make a little fun of the graduate, especially 1 when the graduate is feeling the most serious. But just the same there is mixed in that grin a great deal of only half disguised admiration, a wealth of good wishes and pride. You'll notice that the well delivered swat on the old fellow's wrist did, after all, cause him to turn around and forget for the moment the I bad bump on his head! AND THAT'S A GREAT DEAL IN THESE DAYS, YOUNG PEOPLE. The Times wishes you all the finest sort of a summer. AYe hope that those of you who are going on with your studies will receive cor respondingly as good instruction as the Tacoma schools have given t''l you this last year, and that those of you who are going to pitch right I '"' into the world's work will find jobs that suit yon and in which you can he useful and happy. Fire Chief Is Back With Many Ideas Primed with new ideas for the improvement of the Tacoma fire department, Fire Chief Carlson returned today from Portland, where he and Fire Marshall Chandler have ben makinfe a trip of inspection since Tuesday. The triii was part of the plan of the eficiency committee appoint ed by Commissioner Pettit when lie took office. The chief investigated particul arly Portland's system of Inspec tion for the prevention of fires. While he Is strong for Port land's plan, Chief Carlson report ed today that it will be impossible to carry out the system in Taco ma on such a broad scale, on ac count of lack of funds and men. Have Men For the Job. "In Portland there are .'.OO men In the fire department, Tacoina has only 150 firemen, although Portland is only twice the size of Tacoma. "There they have ..quads of men whose sole business It Is to make a systematic Inspection for the prevention of fires. The en tire city is divided up into dis tricts, and a squad of men is as signed to each district, keeping close tabs on all lion -rs and buildings for fire hazards. In the office alone are six or seven men who keep records of every build- Loeb Leads Tunnelers for Hughes Harmony WASHINGTON, D. C, June 17. i —Charles E. Ing in the city. Chief Scores System. "If we attempted to follow out such a system In Tacoma, we might have enough men left to drive the machines to a fire, but who would fight the blaze when " they got there?" The chief said his idea of noth ing at all was the way the Taco ma fire department tporopria- tions are made under the present system. "Just think of it," ne said. "The fire department here has to pay the water and light depart ment more than $25,000 a year for use of the hydrants in putting out fires! If the city hall or wa- .• ter department should get ablaze, we would have to pay for tlie water to put the blaze out. Will Report Next Week. "When we get through, what do we have left for improving our system or equipment? The added expense gives the Tacoma department a black eye In other cities." The chief was not ready to say today what his recome.idatlons will he. He will make a report of his investigation in Portland m' sometime next week. The whole system ot the de partment needs a change, he be lieves. I fluence on the <lcmort-.it i<- side . jto be exercised by Manager Vance " C. McCormlck. Especially gratifying to the Hughes men was the announce ment by George W. Perkins, "an gel" of the progressives, that peace parleys are looking up. Hughes was not surprised, for much of the week's work in New * York has been devoted to a tun- i nellng process. - 4 Hughes undoubtedly Intends to make such a "blast" in his forth coming acceptance of the nomina tion that Roosevelt can well af ford to come out openly in his support, republican leaders say.
