REPLIES TO UNIONS EDITOR THE TIMES: In The Times of last Thursday I read an article from the labor unions opposing the army post. I want to Bay, right here, that the writer of that article ls deliber ately conveying a false impres sion to the minds of the voters. He states that with Id,ooo sol diers here there will be 6000 dis charges a year. He wants the working men to believe that the government will turn 6000 men a year loose on the community who will go out looking for employment, thereby flooding the labor market and reducing wages. Now let us look at this in a fair-minded way. Out of each 5000 men there will he 4000 who will re-enlist, and, again, out of every 10 'who are discharged eight will go back home, or to the city where they enlisted, for the government al ways gives them transportation. This Is from the statistics of the war department. Another opponent of the bonds told of rioting and of burning a building in San Francisco and wanted the voters to believe that this was done by regulars, when in fact all the trouble was caused by volunteer state regiments. A regular ls too well disciplin ed, a volunteer is always harder to control than a regular. The writer was not a regular, but a member of C company of Tacoma, First Wash. Volunteers. If you want to make this a busy city, vote for the bonds; if you want to keep it a one-horse tank town vote against them. L. A. RICHARDSON. Revere Hotel, Tacoma. Cl'T THE .» T ii) E «. EDITOR THE TIMES: Permit me to suggest that the word "Flats" be adopted to de scribe the level laud between tlie bluffs and from the water front up the valley end that the pre fix "Tide" be dropped. The dyking out of the tide from a large area of this land makes "tide land" a misnomer lint the word "flats" accurately describes and is easily under stood to mean all the level land described above. If your reporters became used to saying flats instead of tide flats or tide land some confusslon will be saved. Yours truly, GEORGE LAWLBR.
