N. S. Tucker, of Argyle, we publish the following ex tracts from a very Interesting Tetter written by ex-Treasurer C. M. Tucker at Dawson City. We believe the news therein contained will be of interest to our readers. „ J wi ON; CITY 'N-w-T July7 lß9B. C. N. S. Tucker, Esq., Argyle Wash. Dear Brother:—l have not heard from you since I left Skagway. We arrived here on the 3rd inst. without accident of any kind and have seen the "Elephant." This isa great town. There is but one principal street and it has ditches and hollows running through it. Over a few are . thrown three poles planked with slabs laid on hit or miss—mostly miss. Wagons go down to the hubs in places in mud. The more substantial buildings are of logs, caulked with moss and ! cov ered with earth and moss. Others are of lumber, and others of canvass or muslin over a frame. Dawson is built on a swamp an Lousetown, or Klondike City, as it is now called, is on. a swamp and Indian cemetery. ; ; I have met most of the San Juan boys here, Harrison, Turnbarge, Pazsons, John Delaney, Jim Morvyn, Donohue, Parks and others. Also Libbie Brad shaw. Most of those who came last fall have claims, but of unknown value, as not one in a . thousand are prospected. Prof. Lippe is said to to 5 have cleaned up $800,000. Probably two ciphers may be superfluous. One cannot believe any thing he : hears here. All the country around here is staked for fifty miles. A country around ■ Dominion Creek is va cant, no , claim staked since November being recognized, but a special permit to prospect it and show that it is good before the claim will be recorded. Then there is a ring wihich is said to have such in fluence that, if a good showing jis made, the claim is reserved for the crown, or refused to be recorded altogether. Those on the inside come in and record and get the: claim. We are thinking :of going down the river to American territory— Forty Mile Creek, h ■ I forgot to mention Fred Knight and Dr. Kelly as being • here. Mrs. K. wants to go out of the country and probably will. Joe Wood is also here. f- .' We had a very ■ pleasant trip down, "shooting the White Horse" and all other rapids, without unloading or taking; a pilot and got; nothing wet. Many were wrecked and lost their outfits. , CL M. Dr. Capron has bought from Gus Gunnerson the fine, dark bay colt which Gus bought last year from James King. A number of lively young people from Friday Harbor, evenly divided between sexes, it was noted, were in town Friday. ; Mrs. Benjamin Hayden and-her two youngest t sons, Joe and ',' Frank, , are spending a week at East \ Sound as the guesta-of Mrs. Eb Harrison. _; ;, if; Roche Harbor Republicans are proud of the fact that this is the banner Re publican precinct in ;; the % county and that it will have the largests represen tation in the coming convention. • "Times" are reported to be very quiet in Victoria.
