Master Ernest Gill broke the large bone in his wrist a few days ago while handling sacks of grain, and is now carrying it in a sling. The B. B. Improvement Co., of Whatcom, expect to have a portion of their new mill ready for operation by the close of this month. On Tuesday last James Tullock, the well known horticulturist of East Sound, shipped 500 boxes of choice ap ples on the mail steamer Lydia Thomp son to Seattle. Emerson Hammer, the unanimous choice of the joint counties of San Juan and Skagit for state senator, is a man of immense popularity in the north west He is a Hoosier by birth, ha vine been born in Montpelier, Blackford county, Indiana, in 1855. In 1878 he came west as far as Lincoln, Kansas, and for three years was deputy county clerk of Lincoln county. Afterwards he was appointed poetmaster of Lin coln, and ills fulfillment of the duties ot this office with noteworthy efficiency and uniform courtesy, is ■till kindly remembered in Lincoln. In thefallof 1883 he engaged in the mercantile business, and continued in this oecn pation until 1888, when he came to Bfcagit county. The first summer In thtecounty he put in clearing kndat Clear Lake, and then took the manage ment of Mortimer Cook's general store at Sterling. The steamer Roche Harbor has been detained up-Sound for some time by a broken Shaft. " Miss Agnes Aiken, of Doe Bay, is visiting her nephew, O. H. Culver, and family for a few days. Assistant Lighthouse Keeper Brooks, of the Turn Point staition, returned Monday from a trip to Port Townsend. I The jxwtofflce department requires that mail for and from the new office at Provost, Stuart island, shall be car ried gratuitously for three months. Jay Aiken, who had been working for the company here nearly a year, left last week to visit his aunts near Point Lawrence before seeking a situa tion in Whatcom. Nearly 8,000 barrels of lime were shipped from here on three steamers recently—most of it going to Southern California and the Hawaiian islands. Four kilns are now burning. Deputy Collector Culver returned Friday after a ten days' absence. He was accompanied by Mrs. Culver and children whom he met at North Bend, B. C, on their return from a four months' visit in Vermont. Howard Conrad, who had been iv the company's employ here for three years or more, left Tuesday for Seattle. He is an ambitious and well educated young man, who deserves success in a broader field than this and is capable of achieving it. Roche. Tito Millions a Year. Sutherland is curbing up his large well with stone Mr. Reddig is doing a splendid busi ness with his evaporator. The evaporators on the island are most all on their last run. Just think, the first prize on home made cheese came to Orcas. Peter La Plant has rented the Hol land place for another year. Win. Hambly's evaporator is turn ing out some fine work this year. Mr. and Mrs. O. Barker returned home last Friday from Whatcom. Why can't San Juan county have a fair next year? Give her a whirl. Bert Buxton is shipping some very fine Italian prunes to Campbell & Son, Seattle. Mr. Weidle, of Fairhaven, was the guest of his father-in-law, Mr. George Gibbs, last week. James Nichols, of East Sound, was awarded premiums on fruit both at U*e State Fair and the Whatcom Fair. Mrs. Still and son, of Fairhaven, made a short visit to friends on the island, returning Saturday on the Buckeye. Tom Dixon, an old resident of this place, but now with his daughter at Fairhaven, was stricken down with paralysis last Friday. The gen tie breeze which struck us from Edwards was merely a puff; but don't tell those long tales, for the sake of The Islander's subscription list. The evaporated prune crop of the island will reach nsarly if not quite 100 tons. At 4 cents a pound the little island of Orcas will sweep in the neat sum of $8,000. Th« first prize on the best packed box of apples at the Whatcom Fair was awarded to George Myers, grown and packed by him at Orcas. They were Sent to Chicago for advertising pur poses by Mr. Wood, of Whatcom. Apples seem to be in good demand. There are quite a number of buyers on the island; s also t a good many letters have been received, enquiring | for car load lots. Give them good, clean • fruit and there will be mo trouble :in the future for good prices. We notice that the Whatcom papers did not give Orcas island any praise at the fair, but gave Skagit county a great nuff. We do not want any more than our due, but as we helped to make the fruit department a succeßS,\we;thooflit they would mention it at least. Whereas, a libel and petition was filed in the district court of the United States for the district of Washington, northern division, on the 6th day of Tune 1898, by Andrew Newhali, as owner of the steamboat Buckeye, praying fora limitation of his liability concerning the loss, destruction, damage and injury occasioned by the disaster to the said steamboat on the ana day of April, 1895, for the reasons and causes in said libel and petition mentioned and praying a monition of the said court in that behalf to be issued, and that all persons claiming damage* for any such loss, destruction, damage, or injury may be thereby cited to appear before said court and make due proof of this respective claims, and, all proceedings being had, that if it appear that the said petitioner is not liable for any such loss, destruction, damage or injury, it may be so finally decreed by this court; and Whereas, the value of the interest of the said petitioner in said steamboat has been duly appraised at three hundred and forty-five dollars ($345-00) and the freight pending on the voyage of said steamboat on the said 2nd day of April, 1895, at the sum of three dollars and fifty cents ($3 50) and a stipulation for the payment into court of the value of the interest of the said petitioner in said steamboat has been given, and the court has ordered that a monition issue against all persons claiming damages for said loss, destruction, or injury, citing them to ap pear and make due proof of their respective claims: You are therefore commanded to cite all persons claiming damages for any loss, de stuction, damage or injury occasioned by said disaster to the said steamboat, to appear before said court and make due proof of their re spective claims before H. Farnsworth, administrator of the estate of Thomas McKenna, deceased, having on the 13th day of September, A. D. 1898, pre sented to the Superior Court of said county and filed therein his final account, and asking that his final account rendered and filed herein, be examined, and if the same be found true and correct and that the said administrator has fully discharged his trust in the administration of said estate, that he and his sureties be dis charged from all liabilities hereinafter to be in curred. Wherefore, It is hereby ordered that Monday, the 17th day of October, A. D. 1898, at 2 o'clock p. m. of said day, at the Court room in the Court house, at Friday Harbor, San Juan coun ty, Washington, be and the same is hereby fixed and appoited as the time and place for the hear ing of said petition and for the examination of said administrator's final account, and any per son interested in said estate may appear and contest the discharge of said administrator. And it is hereby further ordered that notice of such hearing and settlement shall be given by posting notices thereof, not less than 30 days before the day set for said hearing, in three of the most public places in said county and by publishing a similar notice in The San Juan Islander, a weekly newspaper, printed and published and in general circulation in said county; that said notice shall set forth the name of the estate, the name of the administrator and the time and place appointed for the hearing of said petition and settlement of said account.
