ANACORTES.. • ■ EMBER »0, I*Bs A remarkable and unaccountable streak of candor is exhibited in Will I>. .Jenkiu’s recent report Irom the Whatcom county gold mines. He states as the result ol his obser vations that twelve and a half cents is probably the amount of gold thus far taken from those mines. It must be a cold day for Whatcom county when the editor ot the I?eveill*can no longer conscien tiously sound his tuneful notes of commendation, extoling the exceed ing n ents of tl at favored legion in the lofty pitch of the Loom. The rainy season has been fairly inaugurated by heavy rains accom* panied by wind which culminated in a continuous pouring rain and south eastern gale lasting the great part of a week. The smoke and •fog which for two months hung like a pall over the entire Gulf, Straits and Sound region, obscuring and frequently hiding from view all objects a few rods distant, and rendering navigation at all times hazardous, and frequently very dangerous, were swept away by the rain and wind of a singlo night rendering the stars at night, and the sunlight after the storm wonder fully brilliant. Now the air may be breathed with greater freedom, the suspense and d inger from fires smouldering in the forests are over and a long season of vegetation suc ceeding the* summer's drouth still interveues before winter sets in. The fur}' of tho recent ruins will admonish all to look well to needed repairs to shelter themselves and stock from the inclement weather of the fall and winter. Port Townsend expects in a few years to see the wheat which now t?ocs down the Columbia river to the sea. carried by rail and dumped into deep sea vessels oyer the wharves at the Port of Entry. That the bulk of tho wherft growu in Washington Territory will be carried by rail to the Straits of Fuca is probable, but it is not likely that it will go around the whole length of Puget Sound to Pori Townsend, a distance of 30ij miles out ot its course, when it moy reach the Straits directly from the east, at an equally good harbor, on Fidalgo island, and avoid the un- necessary carrying around the Sound merely to reach Port Towu*. . send. A brutal murder occurred at Ferndale on Monday evening of this week. It appears that John Guildy, who has for some time JHade threats to kill different per sons, went to the house of A. C- Mayfield, and calling him out, shot him as he opened the door, killing him instantly. He then shol a son ot Mr. Mayfield, the bullet passing through the lungs, which is also likely to prove fatal. The murder ertbon set fire to a neighbor’s barn after which bo fled to the woods, and at last accounts had not been captured. A reward for bis cup" ture has been offered by the coni' missioners of Whatcom count}’. He is supposed to have taken refuge In a cabin located in a swamp, and parties are in pursuit of him, and will take him dead or alive if they find him. He has been considered as ugly dispositioned raau by those who knew him, frequently threat ening to do mischief and commit murder, but it was taken to be onl}* bluster until the enactment of this tearful tragedy. Whether the crime was committed under tbo vnfluence of liquor, or was the deed of an irresponsible manias docs not appear from the information thus tar obtained.
