"'Because I, did not kill you," an swered Weems. He did not express any regret for having shot Colo but said that he looked as if he were getting along all right. Weems has received the following letter from one of his sisters: '"New York, Aug. 30, 1911. Carl Weems, Colfax, Wash.: 1 have just read a short notice of you having been charged with shooting Leroy Cantrill and wounding Deputy Sheriff Cole. No particulars were given. Did you have a sitser called Ella? If bo, will you please write to me? For I think perhaps I am that sister. If you are my brother, our lister next older'than you (who is with me) and I both will do anything in our power to help you. If you are our brother we both send you our love and we are praying for you. If you are not ear brother who has so long been lost to us you have my heartfelt sym pathy and good wishes. "Please write whether you are,my baby brother or not. l wonder '.( my brother remembers how he used to put his baby arms around my neck and tell secrets to his sister. That sister's heart has ached many a time for those baby arms and kisses. Please write full particulars about Hie trouble yon are in just as Boon as you receive this. "MRS. E. W. BROWN." The prisoner did not show any emotion or interest when the letter was read to him and said that he did not care to answer it, but that he guessed it was from his sister Ella all right. Deputy Sheriff Cole received the following letter at the same time: "New York, Aug. 30. Sheriff Wil liam Cole, Colfax, Wash.: I have Just read a notice in a paper of a young man called Carl Weems being charge^ with sheeting Leroy Cantrill and wounding your arm. 1 had a brother, Carl Weems, who ran away from home when be was a 13-year old boy. if the unfortunate young man who is in trouble is my brother we will be glad to know, and if there is anything we can do for him will you kindly let us know. Please give us full particulars about the shooting and also please tell us when the trial will come off. He was only a little boy when he went away, and such a dear little boy. The various bids received for the construction of Improvement Roads Xos. 1 and 2 being, in the opinion of the Board, excessive in amounts, all were rejected and the County Auditor was directed to readvertlse for bids for the construction of these roads the bids to be opened October 2, 1911. Opening of bids for the construe- lon of Improvement Road No. 3 was deferred to September 18, 1911, at 3: 00 o'clock p. in. A bearing in the matter of the Kla vt no road, petitioned for by B. D. Murray et al., was set for November 0, 1911, at 1:00 o'clock p. m. The petition for the proposed road to be known as the D. F. Engle road was rejected and the costs for the examination and survey order to be charged to the bondsmen, The hearing in tho matter of the W. W. Sherrell road was continued to October 10, l'jl 1 , at 3:00 o'clock p. 111. The hearing in the matter of the Weitz road was continued to October , 911, at 2:30 p. m. The hearing In the matter of the Tekoa-Oakesdale road was continued to October 16, 1911, at 1 o'clock p. m, The hearing in the matter of the Hangman-Creek road was continued to February 5, 1912, at 11 o'clock a. m. Tho hearing in the matter of the Grinnell road was continued to Sep tember 18, 1911, at 2:30 o'clock p. m. Miscellaneous. The Board made an estimate of re ceipts and disbursements for the year 1 91 2 as a basis for the tax levy on the assessment of 1911, and directed that the same be advertised and that a hearing he had thereon on Monday*, October 2, 1911, as by law required. The contract for the construction nt a barn on the new County farm was awarded to A. H. Martin of Colfax, his hid therefor being 460.00. The contract for the painting of the ham was awarded to Housekeeper & Durfee of Colfax, their bid being $ 76.00. The contract for the construction of a sewer system for the new county farm was awarded to Wright & Tier uey of Spokane, their bid therefor be ing $1471.23, ami was considered by the Board to be the best and most advantageous bid offered. Auctioneers' licenses were granted to J. B. Hicks, Pullman, Washington, and M. R. Shephard, Troy,ldaho. Upon the tiling of an Indemnity bond by George Jones, In which It Is -set forth that Warrant No. 3772. •Road District No. 1, has been lost or destroyed, the Board ordered that a warrant ho issued in lien thereof and In like amount, $7.7.".. . The plat and dedication of the fownslte of Ewan, comprising all of the no 1-4 of 26-19-40, except the right of way of C, M. & P. S. Rail read, was approved. The plat and dedication of Ewan Orchard Tracts in the nw 1-4 of 25 --19-40 was approved. The Board directed that the County Treasurer be supplied with a set of Remington & BalUnger's Code of the State of Washington; also that a iult abb- office chair be purchased for the Treasurer's office. The County Superintendent's Certi ficate as to the alteration of the boun daries of School Districts No.* 180 and 181, whereby the nw 1-4 of section 13-18-46 was taken out of District 181 and placed in District' No..
