Include in the unit of medical and lay workers which the American Red Crow has sent to Italy are a number of the leading antituberculosis work ers of the country, sponsored by the National Tuberculosis Association. Dr. William Charles White, who heads the unit, ls medical director of the Tuberculosis League of Pittsburgh, and Dr. Robert H. Bishop, the assist ant director, is secretary of the Aatl- Tuberculosls League; of Cleveland as well as health commissioner of that city. Dr. John H. lawman of Cleve land, a former president of the Na tional Association, is another promi nent member of the unit. Others are Dr. Robert O. Nelson, superintendent of the Cincinnati Anti-Tuberculosis League. These men and women, at the re quest of the Italian government, will co-operate with that country ln apply ing the latest approved American methods for combating the spread of tuberculosis. Some of them will be charged with the establishment of clinics where people of all ages may be examined and treated; others will devote their attention particularly to preventing tuberculosis among chil dren, and a third group will develop health publicity and education. It la to the credit of the anti-tuber culosis campaign In America that lt has produced specialists of such Inter national standing that Italy wishes to call them Into her service temporarily. But the campaign will be continued unremittingly here at home. Its sup port during the ensuing year will be derived not as heretofore from the sale of Red Cross Christmas Seals, but by a special appropriation made by the Red Cross to the National Tuberculo sis Association. Tuberculosis workers on their side will line up with the Red Cross ln Its Christmas Roll Call for universal membership. CONTEST FOR THI JUNIORS. A special feature during the Red Cross Christmas Roll Call will be a Junior Red Cross Four-Minute Men Contest on "Why You Should Join the Reed Crow." The contest will be sim ilar to those previously conducted by the Division of Four Minute Men of tlie Committee on Public Information. It will be held on Friday, December 20th, In all of the School Auxiliaries, and friends and parents of the pupils will be urged to attend. SCHOOL OF MINES The quarter beginning December 30 promises to be a very successful one for tho school of mines. Many of the S. A. T. C. men, realizing the opportunities for an adventurous outdoor life to be found in mining, have signified their Intentions of en rolling in the school of mines for the second quarter. Men now in train ing camp are sending in requests for information, from as far away as Camp Meade, Maryland. Some of the miners who enlisted at the out break of war are expected to return lor the second quarter. This year new equipjnent has been added to the ore testing laboratories, three new electric furnaces have been secured for use in various met allurgical operations, and the oppor tunities in the Northwest for the de velopment of this interesting art are being emphasized. During the past summer Dean Howard and Prof. Warfel of the school made a survey of northeast ern Washington in the search for ores suitable for treatment by elec tricity and as a result erected a small electric furnace in Spokane. During the last four months Prof. Warfel has given all his time to this work and has made a series of in teresting products, thoroughly dem onstrating the feasibility of electric smelting of the rare ores of north eastern Washington. It is confident ly expected that as a result of ths work of the school of mines a new and Important Industry will be de veloped in the Inland Empire. Emblem .and Signet Rings—Ball Jewelry Store.
