It la significant to note that the sugar companies in these states are back of this idea because they have captured and are using the Farm Bureau to advance their own interests as against that of the farmers. . We understand full well that the government is back of the organiza tion of the Farm Bureau and we will assume that when it comes to under standing and. statins the purposes of the bureau that tbe government will be the acknowledged authority. Here is how the government itself, in States Relation Service Document 54 defines the purposes of the Firm Bu reau: "The organization of farmers is not a new idea, it has been the theme of publicists for more than a century and much effective work has been accomplished Thousarids of so-operative agricultural associations are war-Mg.isudiQesltuUy, besides other thousands of farmers' clubs granges, equities, gleaners and other ***m,->na aon-eo_ret fmsraal or if-?*- that « performing an excellent service for rural organiza tions in their respective fields. The County Farm Bureau will help to unify the efforts of these existing or ganizations and to strengthen the work they are doing. It is a non partisan, non-sectarian organiza tion representing the whole farm ing population, men and women alike, and acts as a clearing house for every other association interest ed in work with rural people. Es sentially it is a chamber of agricul ture, ""responding in many of its features with a city chamber of com merce." Thus it appears that the govern ment intends the Farm Bureau to help other farmers' organizations rather than destroy them. The pur pose of the bureau ls to make tho work of the other farmers' organiza tions more effective, just as a city chamber of commerce unobtrusively directs It bankers' organizations, its real estate men's organization, its re tall merchants' organization, Its law yers' organizations, ita doctors' or ganization and its multitude of labor ers' organization to a common end and purpose, that end and purpose being the beat interest of the city as a whole. );: Contrary to the policy of curtailing or preventing other fanners' organl- ations, the government issues thlft specific instruction In Its handbook of instruction to county agents: "Local farmers' clubs, associations etc., should be organized whenever there is a specific object for organiz- For Your Stomach's Sake Try— Robinson's Health Bread ===Made of Whole Wheat—lt's Something Nam : ' '"'' HI " "■ ... ■ . t' \» -- " j*~ ' ■ -~.sv*v —Robinson's "Good Things to Eat" PULLMAN HERALD Ing pad when local people are no** only ready, but willing to shoulder the responsibility of an organization. These- organizations may take the form or Granges, locals of the Soci ety of Equity, Farmers Unions, Farm ers Clubs, Seed Growers* Asociation, Live Stock Associations, Dairy Im provement Asociatlons, Study Clubs, etc." From this it will be seen that It becomes a. part of the county agent's duties to organize associations of farmers whenever It becomes neces sary to accomplish some special ob ject. • -The government fully understood that there was one field that the Farm Bureau must stay clear of anil that was the field we know as "busi ness," that is buying and selling. When the bureau enters that field it is certain to come to grief and its usefulness will be destroyed. On this subject the government says in it.-, county agents' handbook: "The County Farm Bureau or other organization connected with the work of the county agent does not normally undertake to transact co-operative business. It is, how ever, a legitimate function of the Farm Bureau to assist officially in organizing subsidiary associations for the co-operative purchasing and selling of farm commodities and of transacting such business along eco nomic lines." When it comes to selling any farm produce, from apples to sugar beets, the government intends the Farm Bu reau to stand from under and if the farmers think an organization is necessary to help in the marketing they must organize outside the Farm Bureau. It is the function of the Farm Bu reau and the county agent to educate in methods of production. They are intended only to keep the farmer In formed as to the best methods of ag ricultural practice. The county agent is the representative of the Depart ment of Agriculture. He is em ployed to show the farmers how to best do things, to tell them about the best varieties of seeds, etc., to go about among them and ascertain who is employing the best methods, and to carry such methods to other farmers. The county agent has no business championing the cause of any banker, merchant or manufac turer. He has no business to talk politics or attend political conven tions. He has a right to vote for whom he pleases, but he l.as no busi ness to become the partisan for any candidate. The farmers pay taxes to keep the agent In the co nty. He should serve all impartially. When any farmer observes the county agent do ing anything that is not within the province of his duties it is the duty of that farmer to lodge a complaint with his county commissioners and see that the agent attends to business or quits. The beet contracts circulated by the sugar companies with a coupon attached stating "This contract ap proved by Utah State Farm Bureau," and asking for permission to deduct one-half cent per ton to this organi zation, is the rankest kind of pre sumption. It is one of the most glaring frauds ever attempted to be perpetrated upon the citizens of any state. The man who signs such a contract is only contributing means to keep himself in bondage. He is either a natural-born fool or is be ing fooled in the most hurtful way possible. For your own and your children's sake, don't sign such a contract.
