Newton, London^ Says Kxchango Depreciation Will Re sult in LOM of ".-.ports to United states I ——. Pullman this week entertained Dr. Arthur P. Newton, dean of American history at the University of London, who addressed the associated stu dents of the State College in the morning and at noon appeared be fore the chamber of commerce. Dr. Newton is in the United States pri marily to gain an impression of the British possessions from American viewpoint, the same object taking him to numerous other countries on his trip, which will cover a years time. At the student body meeting Dr. Newton took as his subject 'The British Empire," dealing separately with each of the British colonies, ex plaining the form of government, commercial, political, and other con ditions. The visitor's talk before the busi ness men at the chamber of com merce meeting had to do with the international monetary exchange sit uation, especially insofar as it con cerns the exchange depreciation on the British pound in the United States. The exchange depreciation on the British pound, as well as the currency of other European nations, he claimed, will result in a great re duction of the export business ot the United States, the nations affect ed electing to spend their money where it has the greatest value, and where an exchange on an even basis can be established and maintained. He talked at some length of the British debt, stating that the inter est on this debt can be taken care of easily and that the principal will be paid in full at the proper time. -Much of the money borrowed from the United States, he pointed out. was loaned by the British Empire to other less fortunate allied coun tries, and he predicted that prob ably ."hi per cent of this can never be repaid to Great Britain, due to the abnormal conditions under which the people of these countries are now laboring. Great Britain, he said, will make good every cent of it to the United States, however.
