The census bureau, on the strength of registered returns, gives figures to show that the birth rate In the United States exceeds the death rate by one third, which Is a gratifying fact. We are not one of the nations that need be anxious on this vital point as far as present conditions are concerned. One of the most serious troubles In France Is the warning In Its censuses that in some years more of Its Inhab itants die than are born. / Some of Its neighbors grow much faster In population. This disparity was some what noticed In the past, yet without fully realizing the terrible menace In volved. The desolated towns and farms of France are a monument to the old census admonitions and the awful sacrifice of young French man hood Is far more dreadful than the devastation. Often have the public men of France Sounded an alarm on the defective birth rate. It Is much discussed now by thoughtful French legislators and writers. A census al ways demands Intelligent study. The United States grows by Immi gration as well as births, and our school system tends to Americanize the whole body of citizens. Our schools are a great melting pot for Americans of the future and to In crease their proportionate number. The welfare of children Is a great national Issue. The birth rate and death rate need continuous attention. ALL WANT TO LIVE IN PARIS So Many Foreigners Are There That the Frenchman Is Being Crowded. The New York Evening Post's Paris correspondent says that In an article In Excelsior a French writer contends that while Paris before the war was the meeting place of all nationalities. It has now become their permanent abode, so that the Parisians are crowd ed out Into the suburbs or unable to find an apartment In the city. The writer says that If you take a census of the average apartment you will find that It contains "Belgians who left when the Germans came, Russians driven out by bolshevism, French families from the devastated regions who seem to like It where they are. American students with their omnipotent dollars. Englishmen trying to do business and representatives of the Balkan states, Poland, Turkey and other distressed and unsettled regions who are living on the Lord only knows what. Paris Is proud of her cosmo politanism, but Is finding It Inconveni ent when the peoples of the world show so little inclination to move." Cardinal's Hat Symbol of Office. The peculiarity of the cardinal's hat Is that it is not to tie worn. On one occasion only Is it to be seen on the head of the cardinal, and that Is when the pope himself places It there as a symbol of Its owner's elevation to the Sacred college. When the cardinal dies It is placed in his coffin. The hat Is of a deeper red than that of the robe worn by the cardinal. It has long heavy silken cords, each with 15 tas sels at the end. hanging on either side. The crimson robes which, like the hat. denote the cardinal's office, are made of cloth which for several generations past has been supplied by a firm of cloth merchants at Burtscheid, near AJx-la-Chapolle. The process by which the dye Is distilled Is a Jealously guarded secret. Trade With Australia Grows. Trading between this country and Australia Is showing a healthy growth, according to figures supplied to the de partment of commerce by A. W. Fer rln, trade commissioner, who Is at Mel bourne. They cover Imports and ex ports for the first quarter of the cur rent year, and show the Imports dur ing that period to have been about $27,775,000, against exports to this country of approximately $10,350,000. February exports nearly equaled in value the totals for January and March, and in that month the outgoing shipments exceeded the Imports. In the same month, however, the value of the imports was less than half of the goods brought in during March. Making It Homelike. Gasoline for 1-3 Less will save you from 25 to 40 per cent of your gasoline consumption, increase speed and power, increase efficiency of motor, entirely REMOVE THE CARBON, and keep the motor and spark plugs clean. THESE RESULTS ARE GUARANTEED. What the American Steam Carburetor Is —The American Steam Carburetor does not supplant the regular carburetor of a car. but is an auxiliary car buretor fastened to the exhaust pipe of tho motor. It takes a very small amount of water from the cooling system, and by means of the heat of the exhaust, transforms it into LIVE STEAM, which is introduced into the intake manifold above the regular carburetor. The heat of the steam breaks up the gas par ticles and thereby creates a more perfect combus tion of the gasoline vapor. There is no unusued gasoline vapor. The greatest benefit, however, is the fact that the LIVE STEAM is decomposed by the intense heat within the motor into its two component gases, oxygen and hydrogen. The hydrogen burns and thereby intensifies the effect of the explosion, giv ing more power and speed, and the oxygen sup ports this combustion, insuring a complete com bustion of the gases, and likewise, combines with the carbon which is constantly formed in the ex plosion chamber, and by the burning of oil that seeps through past the piston rings, entirety re moving the carbon, which then passes out through the exhaust in the form of a gas. Saves One-third or More of Your Gasoline- In addition to insuring a COMPLETE combustion of the gasoline vapor, this wonderful device enables you to burn the hydrogen of the water. The effect 01 this is to reduce gasoline consumption by from 25 to 40 per cent, or an average of one-third. This alone will save the small cost of the device in a lew weeks. Some users report a saving as great as BO per cent. This statement is founded in fact — we guarantee a saving of at least -."» per cent. Less Oil —Without the American Steam Car buretor a certain amount of raw or unvaporized gasoline gets into the cylinders, seeps down the cylinder walls, thus thinning the oil used for lubri cation. With the American Steam Carburetor there is no unused gas, as every particle is burned. Added to the saving of lubricating oil, the danger of scored cylinders and burned-out bearings is minimized. We guarantee to every user of the American Steam Carburetor, the following: 1. It will save from •J.") to 41) per cent in gasoline. 2. That it will remove ami eliminate carbon ami keep the spark plugs clean 3, That it will increase the efficiency of the motor and give greater power ami speed. 4. That it is a perfected device ami will give no me chanical trouble. We will install the American Steam Carburetor on your pleasure car, truck or tractor, and if at the end of ten days it has failed to live up to above claims, your money will be im mediately refunded.
