OCTOBER tl, 1898. A man who believes in bimitalism and then goeß to the polls on election day and scratches in favor of an adherent of tl.e gold standard does violence tn honor and duty. "Clown Cushiintn,'' as Nelson Bennett calls bim, lost his opportunity in life lfie when he failed to connect with a minstrel show. 11*=" A.nild have mada a capital end man. !>.:■ .'_ . on I- ..II i ISUC II >Vi bl fon the voters. The people's parly favors the proposed measure, being confident that the people are i iinpetent to rule. The republican party is ajainsl popular government. If the central coummiee desires to af ford a real treat for all lovers of the prin ciple of bimetslism, let that body at once engage a hall and mvi c Judge Allen to give the people the benefit of bis profound study of this, the question of the age. Mr. McKinley discharged Col. Roose velt to come home and run for governor of New York, but retains Col. Bryan with his regiment in the everglades of Florida, fs there any politics in this? Who is swinging around the circle now, Major McKinley or Col. Bryan. Does any man in Yakima county doubt tbe sworn statement of Bert Flint, whose i.ame is a synonym of honor in this com munity, that the fusion office holders of this county have saved to tbe tax payers over $12,000 in the past year and a half? Twelve thousand dollars saved is twelve thousand dollars earned, as Poor Richard "*y°. •_________■_______. Spain ia like some children; a sound tbrashiug makes her worse rather than better. Thia is evidenced by an order issued since the protocol was signed whereby she releases from African prisons 700 Nanigoee for the purpose of having tbem return to Cuba, whence they were originally deported. Editor Daniels of tbe Vancouver Reg ister is placed in the position of fighting against his own brother, who is running for the legislature on the gold hug ticket; but he ieiloing it manfully. It is a good example set. Let every silver man in the state follow suit and vote for his own legislative candidate, regardless of friend ship or relationship or any other tie. Up to the time of the present county administration those doing business with Yakima county found it necessary to add from 20 to 30 per ceut to make up for tbe discount on the warrants which they re ceived. Now, under fusion management, the county secures its supplies and work sb cheaply as anybody else and pays in those Bame warrants —but tbey are worth 100 cents on the dollar. Our next member of congress Hon. W. L. Jones of North Yakima is known as the Abraham Lincoln of the West, and is one of the grandest men in the state of Washington.—Goldendale Agriculturist. Between Abraham Lincoln Junes and Al .rah in i Lincoln Cushman, the good and honored original Abraham Lincoln wi u'd have a hard time retaining his identity, were he on earth today. Would-be State Senator Baker says in tbe P.-I. that Klickitat is going to stay in the Republican column, because un der Cleveland tbey only raised 000,000 bushels of wheat at '_!_! cents. This year tbey have a million bushels surplus at SO cents. Mr. Baker evidently thinks tbat McKinley makes tbe wheat grow snd that under republican rule they don't need any fertilizers. In 18G4 congress gave the Northern Pa cific railway company 43,000,000 acres of tbe public domain. When tbat company went into tbe bands of a receiver and was reorganized under another title by the laws of Wisconsin, it is claimed tbat the land grant lapsed to the government. Senator Turner defeated tbe efforts of Senator Wilson to have congress validate tbe land grant in behalf of the new com pany and asked that action be deferred until the next legislature of Washington met to memorialize congress ou the sub ject. The late Mr. Saxton, of Canton, the president's brother-in-law, who waa as sassinated by a widow whom he had wronged, had a reputation of breaking np more families than any other man in that part of Ohio. Mr. Saxton should have exerted hie influence with Alger for a etaff appointment in the army. He might have etill lived to continue bia illustrious career indefinitely. Albert Johnson, the new proprietor of the Tacoma News, prints a card announc ing the policy of the management. Inci dentally he speaks of the retention of V. A. Kyan as associate editor. This will be gratifying news to the press of the coast, as Mr. Kyan is one of Ihe best if not the beet, panigrapl.ers in the west. Any man who can figure out enough changes from the fusion ranks to the re publican party to overcome the norma majority ol SM for Bryan two years ago in Yakima county, must he a lightning calculator. The llryan majority caunot be overcome, gentlemen, except by fraud, and as the fusioiimts sre in possession of the machinery of the law, frauds on tbe loi'iloi box will not go unpunished. Don't trade or dicker on the peoples party ticket. Every man on the ticket is an honor and credit to the party. Close up the ranks and vote the ticket straight from top to bottom by making one.X only at the top of your ballot. If you attempt to scratch yon may make some mistake that will invalidate the ballot and cause it to be thrown out. The safest way is to vote it straight. The Agriculturist calls on the citizens of ii.ildend.ili* to turn out and hear "Yakima Jones, known everywhere as the Abraham Lincoln of the west." The Tacoma Ledger likewise dubs Jones' run ning mate, Cushn an, as "the Abraham Lincoln of tbe West." If this brace of prosperity spielers break into congress, they will, like the famous gentleman from Oshkoeh, contribute to the gaiety of na tions by showing in a double sense that comparisons are odious. In Senator Turner's hat of gilded sa traps and society sapheads, who were ap pointed to high positions over our gallant soldiers, be named James Q. Blame jr. This son of his father is now a self con fessed smuggler. He boasted in New York recently of smuggling Manila cigars on bis return borne and tbat tbe mere mention of his name paralyzed tbe cus toms officers, wbo let him pass unques tioned with bis plunder. Mr. Humphrey, "the crack republican orator of Seattle," stated in his opera houße speech that the 71st New York was "a cowardly regiment, which laid down and let the colored immune*, walk over their liodies to a glorious victory on tbe heights of El Caney." Ex-Governor Campbell, of Ohio, in a recent speech at Tammany hall, New York, said: "Isaw one regiment (the Seventy-First) come hack and out of a total number there came but 300 and all bad to ride. Ask tbe republican administration who caused them to rot like cattle in a foreign land." Tbe conquering nation generally ab sorbs tbe vices of tbe conquered. The Hispano American war bas revived tbe ancient art of gambling in all its spice and variety in this country. Even in Yakima county the nickle in tbe slot machines are multiplying witb such ra pidity that Uncle Sam bas caught the craze and established one of tbe machines in the poßtoffic. The school boys have tbe fever and scores of little chaps may be seen on the campus, shooting marbles in rudely desijned cigar boxes witb slots, which the Yakima youth daily gamble witb on the green. It is to be hoped that tbe fad may not spread to the ordinary forms of social entertainments gotten up for revenue only. Candidate Cushman stated in his speech at Mason's opera house that the coinage of metallic money by tbe gen eral government was not constitutional. Daniel Webster, another expounder of the constitution, said it was and this proposition was reiterated by James G. Blame in Congress. Webster also said, as quoted by Blame, tbat it was uncon stitutional to destroy as money, either gold or silver. Mr. Cushman knows that silver was the standard money of the United States when the federal constitu tion was adopted and it bad been used as money in all the ages and by all countries prior to its recognition as money by the constitution of the I'nited States. It was always regarded as the best legal tender from tbe earliest civilization down to 1873, when it was secretly demonetized by a conspiracy of the money masters of tbe nation. Every etudent of the question kuows that this has been tbe chief cause of the destruction of values and tlie con sequent misfortune and misery of tl.e people. Therecan.be no real, lasting and general prosperity until this crime tits been redressed by the full restoration cf silver. Mrs. Scott Dnniwav **o' the governor's ollice, Salem, Ore.." is one of the 107 suc cessful guessers ot a picture puzzle in tbe Examiner. If Col. Harvey Scott, of tbe Oregonian, will train hia mental 31! inch gun on another of the Examiner's prize puzzles and win a second prize in the family, he might modily bis views on the enterprise nf yellow journalism. The desperate straits the Kepublican I leaders are in Is shown by their campaign lie that the fusion party plath.rm en dorses the single tax propaganda. The i fact remaitiN tlii-t the amendment to the constitution regarding local option in tax ation, lals. ly called single lax, waa voted j for by nearly all the republicansla the: last, legislature, and the rr.Hj iriiy of the votes cant againat it in both houses were ; cast hy populists. Speaking of prosperity ! Dun's Cjii. mercial Agency reports last Saturday that th" failures nf the week Imve heen 22 1 againet ___.4 for Ihe same week last year. Prosperity, like other large liodieH, moves slowly. The gold standard Tacoma I_edger prists an interview with a com mercial traveler fr.im Michigan who says j "people in the Central states are depriv- j ing themselves of everything but the barest necessaries of life." Perhaps hy I 1900 the people of those states, at least, will discover that falling prices are not what they real I v want. Tbe Republican party of Yakiniß county stands committed to a policy, which, if indorsed by tbe sheep men, will forever deprive them of just sym pathy by their fellow citizens. Tbeeheep men are compelled to pay $_!50 yearly for each band of sheep to tbe Northern Pa cific Railway Company and in addition to this unjust and burdensome toll the Republican party would force them to pay a like amount to tbe general govern ment. This will in time, amount to a prohibition of the sheep industry. Mr. Colby, unlike Mr. Englehart, does not stand on that platform. THE COMING CAMPAIGN. Tbe Oregonian now admits that the issues are being made up for the cam paign in I'.khi and lint "silver is to be tbe paramount issue." McKinley and Bryan, it says, will again be tbe leaders. The importance of the preceding election has a double significance in view of this stupendous fact. New men, new issues. The Republican party of Abraham Lincoln strove to ameliorate the condi tion of the masses. The republican parly of William McKinley seeks to ameliorate tbe condition of the classes. The democratic party of Thomas Jef ferson sought to legislate on the theory of Adam Smith that, where there are two parties to a trade, both must be gainers. Tbe democratic party of Grover Cleve land labored to legislate ou the theory of the gold gamblers tbat what one losts another wins. It is in this money mill millionaires are made. It is in this financial factory trusts are formed. Congress limits tbe production of money, and trusts limit tbe production of other necessaries J|until the right and left band of jgreedj are crushing in tbeii cruel clutch this [infant republic hardly out of its swaddling clothes.
