ownership who profess so much con
cern lest cities undertaking to own
and operate their public utilities
will lose money thereby should take
a glance at the list below. It. sjlves

municipal electric light plants. And,

have not increased rates.

Nineteen cities and towns in the

Counties for the Year 1918."
Tiie total ordinary receipts of
these 19 plants were $1,917,836; the
total operating expenses were $903,-
S0I1: the fiet operating expenses
were $903,80b; the net. operating
revenue was $1,014,030. Out of this
sum was paid 1287,16$ for Interest
imd redemption of bonds and $443,
--275 for extensions and improve
ments, which lust sum In eludes
$71,310 receipts from the sale of
bonds. The net profit was 1404,646.
The item of depreciation would ap
pear tn lie amply provided for by
the sum expended for the redemp
tion of bonds and for the improve

way 26 miles in length, and is mak
ing a profit of more than $25,000 a
year.

The ""ity of Milwaukee made a
clpar profit of $580,166.46 on its Mu
nicipal Water Wurks system last
year with rates at 6 cents per 1.000
gallons, which amounts to about
25 cents per ordinary family per
month, and no "minimum charge."

Public spirited men In the States
of Maine have begun a fight for the
stale ownership of the water power
of the. State for the purpose of de
veloping cheap electric current.
They have learned the lesson from
the remarkable success of the On
tario Hydro-electric ommisslon.
which has reduced the cost of elec
tricity from 0 cents to less than S
cents per k.w.h. by public owner
ship.
Ownership of Water Powers
The Municipal league of Georgia
is doing some real work. At the
recent session held in Atlanta, July
S. id 10. the subject of the public
ownership and development of the
water power of the State in order
to produce cheap electric current
for commercial and municipal pur
poses was thoroughly discussed.
The general view of the confer
ence seemed pretty well summar
ized by the Secretary. J. P Jones, in
the following paragraph
"If the Stale of Georgia would
only develop its water powers and
sell the electricity generated there
from to the municipalities at cost,
after deducting for interest, depre
ciation and a sinking fund, and
would then allow the municipTjjl [v
to distribute the current to the con
sumer, or should the State of Geor
gia grant the municipalities tht
right to collectively develop theS'>
Wtated powers, it would soon he
transformed into" one of the great
est manufacturing states in the
[Tnion, for thousands of new facto
ries giving employment to hundreds
of thousands of workingmen would
be attracted here because of the low
priced power. Factories located
within its boundaries would also

sition for the municipal ownership 1

4th.
The believers in publicly owned
public utilities are growing in mint
hers o\or the entire continent, and
it is pleasant to extend the congrat
ulatory glad hand to new converts
Bui it is more pleasing to receive I
new converts to the cause just after I
