Intelligence and progress, but history
Is history, and the actions of Freder
ick the Great In furn.rft.lng his uncle.
King George of England, with Hes- j J
sian troops, need not detract from
the splendor of German history nor
from the glory of German states
craft. Chamber's Encyclopedia says
of Frederick 11 and the Hessians;
"Frederick's Impatience -Under the
rigid military discipline of his father
gave rise to dissensions and he tried
to escape to the court of his uncle,
King George of England. Being
seized In the act, his conduct was
visited with still greater severity and
he was kept In close confinement,
while his friend. Lieutenant Katt,
was executed In his sight.
On coming to the throne Frederick
pursued the same mercenary policy
and kept up a splendid court on the
proceeds of the pay, amounting to
3.000.000 pound sterling, which the
British government gave him for the
services of 22,000 Hessian troops,
who fought ugainst the American
colonies in the war of independence.
Frederick declared the cit
izen class to be destitute alike of
ability und honor and relied, not up
on the loye of his tjpople. but on his
army and his purse."

A new serial story by Joaquin Mil
ler, called "The Building of the City
Beautiful." began in the December
ii urn be r of The Arena. It deals with
the rebuilding of Jerusalem by the
Jews and affords Miller a rich oppor
tunity to indulge In poetic sentiment
of rare beauty and sublimity. Borne
of Miller's best poems have their
foundations In Palestine Jerusalem
the Nazarene. And though there
is a wealth of imagery and reverence
In these poems of Palestine, yet there
is an irreligious undercurrent in Mil
ler's thought; a sort of stern fatal
Ism which has not, and never will,
surrender to the true spirit of the
Christian faith. The opening chapter
tit this story gives evidence of being
the poet's best prose work. The sub
ject Is inspiring, the scenes are sacred
to human history and the world-old
longing of the Jewish race to return
and re-establish Jerusalem, gives
umple scope for transcendent imag
ery In the story. Miller has never
been a prose writer of even mediocre
ability. His stories have never been
read fur any other reason than that
Joaquin Miller's name was attached
to them. It now seems as If this last

was the link that, long missing, was
discovered by those Intrepid explor

bound the Atlantic to the Puciflc,
and made possible Uncle Sam's un

which were washed by the restless
waves of both great oceans. Let us

The honor uf Umatilla county Is

the ultimate benefits to this county
will be so great, when the object of
thlH fund is so vital to the great In

content to fall to do her share?
Every man to whom the contracts I
for the collection of funds are sent,
has been especially chosen by the j

pecially fitted In his locality to reach
the right men In the right way and
secure results. This Is a labor for

every citizen should be proud to
work for a few days. The present
freight sate on wheat from Umatilla
county to Portland Is nine cents per j
bushel. Where there is river com
petition wheat can be hauled the
same distance for five cents per
bushel. On 3,000.000 bushels, or one
light crop In Umatilla county, the
saving would amount to 1120.000..
The county is only asked to contrib
ute $5000 to the portage deficit In
view of the great saving, should
5000 stand In the way? Will the
failure to collect 10000 In thl county

long sought relief? It should not be
necessary to seek out the shippers
