Since the tragic death of Conductor
Charles F. Brown at Kamela, on the
morning of November 8. the 13tl)
train order of each day has been for
ever abolished on the Mountain di
vision of the O. R. ft N.
The lust train order aliened by Con
duclor Brown on that fatal trip was
order No. 13, which he received at
Bingham Springs snd which. In hi
usual jovial manner, he at first re
fused to sign for, telling the despatch-
er to change the number.
After a few words of joking over
the wires with the dispatcher. Con
ductor Brown took the order and In
delivering a copy of It to Engineer
Pete Thetsen said In fun: "That's n
bad one. Pete, look at the number and
then look out"
Jt was the lust order Mr. Brown

When the news of his death reach

membeied that he had Joked about
the number of the order, and then
and there It was decided to never
again issue Order No. 13 to a train
from the La Grande dispatcher's of
fice. The train orders Issued from the
dispatcher's office begin at No. 1. at
midnight, and run consecutively
through the day, until the next mid

the course of the 14 hours.
Hereafter the blank space in the
order book, assigned for a descrip

Ak Why Divide tlic District?
The proposed bill of Senator Rand
for the division of the Eighth Judicial
district lu which linker county will
be in a district by Itself and Union
and WHllowa counties included In the
other, under ordinary circumstances
and conditions would huve compara
tively easy Killing through the legisla
ture. Hut already there are rumors
of opposition from many sources.
When considered frm a nnn-pnllt-Ical
standpoint, such a law would be
acceptable to all the counties con
cerned, but there are several political
considerations that come In the reck
oning, especially at this time when the
:iiointtve, power to fill the new of
fices is vested tn the democratic gov
ernor. Itepubllcans of Union and
Wallowa countleo ci'iu be imagined'
meekly submitting to the replace,
ment of a republican district attorney
In the former nnd u deputy In the lat
ter county by the brethren of the op
posite political faith. And some of
the pipe dreams might be applied to
the judgeship In this county. Repub
licans of Union and Wallowa coun
ties have labored long nnd hard to
bring the office of the district attor
ney within the pnle of republicanism,
and to have their realization thus
suddenly ended would be a blow and
they will not meekly submit to It.
There are many "Ifs" and "ands"
to be considered In the "whys" and
"wherefores" of such legislation at
the coming session of the legislature.
"If" the law should not become oper
ative until the next general election.
"and" the present governor should
not be re-elected: These are potent
questions" that are at agitating the
minds of the faithful nt present, and
the average member of any political
party prefers to play a cinch when
he holds the cards, than to take a long
chance and a possible uncertainty.
