This would be more Just, more sensible more business-like than to fatten the state farm. Longfellow. President Roosevelt and Dr. Charles Wugner, the German preacher, are now throwing bouquets at each other, through the Associated Press. In true Alfonso and Gaston style. It would be poor business policy to discharge the street commissioner now, at the very time when street work Is needed and when skillful and ' constant attention Is necessary to keep the streetB and sidewalks from "becoming badly run down for spring. It is not ulways economy to tempor arily cut down expenses. The first Chttxtmua of little Alex Romanoff, only son of the czar, was not the happiest imaginable. Al though christened, baptized, conse crated and fixed tn the royal calendar as the successor of his weakling dud- dy, this little savage Is yet too young to understand the shadow that hovers over his life and those of Mb house hold. Although but an Infant, his ig norant pagan father alludes to him as the "prince," and though yet wear ing I'M-s robes of babyhood, his edu- cai:..:, training, career, murriun .wi polk.. ..j future czar, are already de cided upon In detail. In a sort ot royal lunacy, pitiable only that Is en couraged and pampered, this little scion of Russian royulty is already discussed in the European throne rooms, and grey-haired kings, who should know better,' find themselves wondering what he will do in the fu" ture drama of politics and govern ment. His father an Imbecile and his mother hated by the Ignorant Rus sian nobility because she has borne five girls before bringing u son Into the world, Alex has but little to be merry for, If he were only old enough to know .It. It Is cruelly hinted that the death blow to be struck the portage road "bill this winter is to come from East ern Oregon. It Is openly declared that an effort will be made to repeal the bill, notwithstanding the fact thu "the right of way is purchased and the contract let. It Is hardly believable that such covert perfidy as this is pos sible. It is beyond comprehension that a man representing this section of the stnte the only section to be directly benefited by the portage road, could have the brazen rascality to sell out his country to the rallrouds or other Interests working against the portnge road. How would such a man be received by his outraged constit uency, on his return from Salem? On what grounds could an Eastern Ore gon citizen Justify such treachery? It Is hoped that the suggestion is a wicked, unfounded rumor. In today's East Oregonlan Is a "brief note announcing the sale of ' sr7.""0 worth of wheat, or'only a part of one year's crop by one man tn Ad ams county, Washington. There is . an enchanting story In such a trans- action, and yet It is so common to Eastern Oregon that It will be passed by unnoticed. Nowhere else -in the world have audi fortunes been made In such brief periods as In this won derful empire included In a circle 100 miles In diameter, with Pendleton as - the center. In Umatilla, Walla Walla and Adams counties are men now -worth from $30,000 to 150,000 each, -In farming lands, crops and money, -who 10 years ago were either strug gling poor renters or poorer farm hands. The story seems unbelievable to one not familiar with the facts, yet it Is true. Nowhere else in the world does opportunity offer such entranc ing returns for labor, grit, persistence and horse sense, as In the Inland Em pire. Individual Instances of quick fortunes from wheat raising would read like fairy tales, yet they can be Aold by the dozens tn Umatilla county. The state experimental farm at X'nlun Is all right. It la a useful state institution. The East Oregonlan In dorses the spirit and Ideal that .prompted Its establishment. Agri cultural science and experiment are necessary. The state should promote them and foster them and teach them. But then, there's a limit. The state farm at Union does not possibly need 420,000 from the coming legislature. It comprises $40 acres of the best land In Oregon, almost every foot of which la in cultivation. A $7000 barn .Jius Just been constructed on the farm. .About 600 tons of hay is harvested annually, besides an enormous amount of other profitable crops. Now let .the farm produce something. Under proper management It should yield a handsome income to the state. Let It make good. Give to Eastern Ore gon schools the amount asked for the farm. The Weston Normal Is a strug gling state institution, meeting the ed ucatlonal demands of over half the area of the state. Put it on Its feet. Place It beyond the starvation stage, TIs an old story that the kings of Bavaria have long derived a very con siderable profit from their breweries in Munich and now, from a neighbor ing corner of Europe, come the de tails of another Instance of royalty in business. Wllhelmtna, Queen of Hol land, Is making money by selling milk anu outter. As a child Wilhelmlna kept chick ens. She loved them dearly, had pet names for most of them, fed them to the queen's taste (literally) and. quite Incidentally, made pocket money out of them. With her accession to the throne the barnyurd was forgotten, but perhaps the royal state has he. I come a matter "of course." allowing the queenly thoughts to travel back to the more prosaic pleusures of other days. Whatever the reason, not long ago Prince Henry bought for his royal wife, several cows, which are placed on the rich land adjoining the palace at Loo. These prospered so well, and their milk and butter added so much to the delights of the palace table, that the queen decided to engage in the business of dairying. The mana ger of her estates has since visited all of the famous stock farms of the country, and has purchased 34 of the best cows to be had in all Holland. These have Joined their fellows who led the way In the experiment, and ilniry products are now on sale under the palace auspices, for the "venture" has proved far more than self-supporting. Dr. Pierce, chief con suiting surgeon, started experiments, some three years ago. with the Finaen light tn conjunction with the X-ray in the ttvtit ment of diseases. lie got excellent rentilb tberefrnnv and was among the first to adapt this remarkable cure to many cases which it was formerly supposed must of necessity be treated by the knife. Not only is Ir. R. V. Pierce notable for his surgical achievements at his hospital in Bu&alo. but nearly a third of a century ago he discovered certain Toots and herbs which were nature's remedies, and suc ceeded in puttiug -hem up in a form tliat would be easily procured and ready to use.
