Meany to erect a monument to the memory of Chief Joseph, the Nex Peree Indian, does not meet with the approval of Lew P. Wilmot, of Kel ler, Washington, who probably knows as much about this famous chieftain and his depredations aa does any other man In Iowa or Washington, says the Seattle News. Mr. Wllmont was a volunteer scout and accompanied the United States troops and volunteer parties during the days when Chief Joseph and his warriors wrought so much havoc in Camas county, Idaho. Mr. Wilmot be lieves Chief Joseph to be nothing; more than a murderer and suggests that If the Washington State Historical soci ety has any money to be spent In monuments to be erected to commem orate the bravery of the men shot down,' some of them in cold blood, by this Indian chief to whose memory Professor Meany, of the Washington State University, desires the erection of a monument Mr. Wilmot has written to the News protesting against this action on the tiart of the historical society. In his communication he says: "I notice an article In an Issue of the News of recent date, stating that the Historical Society of Washington was going to erect a monument over the grave of Chief Joseph. "I should like to have Professor Meany state what Joseph ever did that would! entitle him to this great dis tinction. All I ask Is that the pro fessor . confine himself to the truth.. "I will with your permission, Mr. Editor, state why a monument should be erected to the memory of some of the men who gave up their lives In order to protect the citizens of Camas Prairie, against the depredations of this Indian, who had never been wronged by an Individual of that county. "Chief Joseph was an Indian. This he could not help, and he hated the whites with that bitter Intensity, that la bom In the Indian. That Chief Joseph had a good and valid reason for hating the white race I think is true.' because of the treatment he re celved from them. But when Chief Joseph through his cowardly nature, failed to niflict punishment on those who had wronged him, and came over Into our country and , murdered and robbed men, women and children, who had never wronged him or any other Indian, he plnced. himself beyond the pale of sympathy of all fair minded persons. : "Will Professor Meany tell us why It was that Chief Joseph had Lew Day shot In the back when he was going to Oeneral Howard for assistance and why It was that Chief Joseph waylaid Hen Norton; 4 wounded Mrs. nonon, killed Johnny Chamberlain and his six vear old daughter, and tcok his baby girl by the heels and knocked Its head against the ground, and caused it to bite a part of its tongue off, or per haps they cut It off and then ran a knife down through its neck, between the jugulur vein and the neck bone: then cuptured Mrs. Chumberlaln and subjected her to treatment so Inhu man that It cannot be published? "As to his bravery, I owe It to his cowardice that I am now permitted this effort to do him Justice. Had he been a brave man I would not now be here to tell of his butchery. When he failed to blot us out of existence, after our little handful of soldiers had charged through his line and scattered himself and his warriors like so muny scared sheep, and through the death of our captain we had been halt ed in the prairie, reduced by casualties to less than 10 men, and surrounded by all of his warriors, did he then show any signs of bravery? Not he. And when Lieutenant Rains and a little handful of men went to the res cue of Blewett, were surrounded at the foot of Cottonwood hill, and with six of them cut off, took refuge behind some rocks, where they stood off the whole of this brave Indian's band until their ammunition was exhausted, It was then that Chief Joseph showed his bravery by walking up to those gal lant United States soldiers and shoot In K each one In the head. "Now that Chief Joseph has paid the penalty that nature exnets from all of us why not let him rest In peace. And if there are to be any monuments erected by the Washington Historical Society why not erect one over the place where Lew Day was shot, one over the scene of Captain Randall a death; or one where Ben Evans and D. H. Howser were killed while golns to the relief of soldiers who wera re ported as being surrounded by the In dlans. Thus would the society receive the commendation of all good citizens. 'So long as Chief Joseph's admirers try to make an unsuspecting public believe that he was a hero then long will the truth be written by Lew Wilmot" Low Rates East. Fort Worth, Texas, Is temporarily the home of a man who is imbued with an ambition to organize a cat-' tlemen'a trust. His name is R. S. Freedman, and he halls from New York city. At Fort Worth he has been exploiting his scheme Industri ously, but so far Texas cattlemen have not rallied around his banner numerously. The Fort Worth Tele gram quotes him as saying: "The plan of the organization is to secure as far as possible every cattle man In the United States as a mem ber, basing the fees on the number of cattle owned by the member. As soon as the organization is completed It will open offices at every packing center In the United States, not only In the centers, but wherever there Is a packing house, there will be found branch of the association, which will keep a perfect tab on what the other fellow is doing. 'This association will know in so far as possible, just how many cattle are In the possession of the packers, how much dressed meat they may have on hand, In other words, the as sociation will know what the demand for dressed meat will be next week. It win know how many head the pack ers will have to buy before they will be able to fill that demand or shut down their plants. 'In addition to the above, this as sociation will know Just how many marketable cattle belonging to mem bers of the association that there may be ready to ship, and who has them. "With this Information, the asso elation will be In a position to make the market price on the cattle, and when they have made that price, the members will be Instructed to ship their stock In the quantities needt'd. This will make a greater trust than now exists, but it will be controlled by the stockmen, they will be In pos session of the lines, and drive Instead of being led. "Now there is Just so many cattle that will be marketed within the next 12 months. Every head placed on the market will be bought and made Into beef. The market fluctuates only because the packers take advan tage of the Ignorance of the cow man who does not know how many head thepackers have on hand, and consequently how many they must buy. If these cows have been ship ped to the stock yards they cannot afford to hold out and wait, as the expenses would be too great. The packer knows this. But" supposing the packers would have to agree to take so many head at a certain price agreed upon in advance, then there would be no waiting in the yards. The packers must have the cattle or they cannot run. They have money In vested, ajid cannot afford to wait as well as the cattlemen, 1 oply the cattlemen could wait tocether and know when the wait. This the In ternational Cattlemen's association will know when to do, and will so In form Its members." A Bad Scare.
