Hog- Hermlston. Dec. 23. Chrlsmas will be celebrated In good old style In Hermiston his year. At the Hermls ton hall Santa Claus will appear In person, and there will be a Christmas tree. The arrangements for the af fair have been completed and the program committee has arranged a fine program of music and recita tions. Presents will be hung on the trees which will be distributed at the close of the program. Umatilla tribe No. 47, Redmen, has elected the following officers for the ensuing year: Sachem, K. K. Bowsher; prophet, George Carr; sen ior sagamore, George Tyacke; Junior sagamore, Roy Saxton; keeper of wampum, John Donavan; chief of records, Harry Burke. Louis Scholl, Jr., of Echo, was a recent vislor In the city on business. O F. lodge lectured here a few evenings ago, The members of the ladies' aid held a church fair and social on the 17th which proved to be a great success. Cattle Shipments. Eleven carloads of cattle wen out from this place In the past several days to the JJnion Meat company at Portland, most of which was shipped by the Stanfleld brothers, and a few loads were shipped by Frank Sloan. Seven loads of these were steers and were for Christmas beef. Many ship ments are expected to b made after the first of the year. School Tax Loried. At a recent meeting of the school board a six mill tax was levied by the school district. Last year It took an ls-miu tax to raise the money that a 6-mlll tax will raise this year. There was quite a fall of snow In the Echo country Friday and Satur day, being almost enough for sleigh ing. The rain of Saturday took most of It away, however. Pioneer to California. D. Wells, one of the, engineers at the head of the reclamation service has been here looking over the pro ject. Tom Duncan of Portland, was here this week lookine over business in terests here. NEW LODGE ORGANIZED. Lartreot Initiation Ever In State 01 Oregon. Freewater. Dec. 23. Freewater lodge No. 202 has been organized with a charter list of 75 members, Grand Master of Oregon, Kicnara Srot't was here for the purpose of organizing this lodge Friday night last. Of the number 65 were can dldates who were Initiated Into the secret work of the order by teams from the two lodges at Walla Walla and at Milton. This Is the largest number of candidates ever Initiated into this order at one time In the state, and this lodge gives every in dicatlon of being a very strong one, the newly elected officers of the lodge are as follows: P.
