Teach me to sound one note,
oh, God.
Full, rounded, that shall n.n

In life's great onward, garner

And lo, I will not count the

God. I cannot bear to go
This journey through of Joy

And af the end my dying hands
Hold not one golden, death

Let all life's joys, if so must be.
Pause, not to hearten me, but

To know, ere death and I

That love is richer for my sake.

THK DFSEUT IX DEMAND.
If you do not believe that the
Umatilla county desert is rapidly dis
appearing, watch the land office and
abstract office records. If you do not
believe that people have faith In the
sagebrush districts. Just keep your
nger on the real estate pulse for a
few days and be convinced.
For the past week an average of
about 10 claims per day have been
located In the Hermlston district,
through the La Grande land office
and within the same time a number
of tracts of arid land under the Hin
kle ditch adjoining the government
irrigation project have been purchas
ed by actual homeseekers, home
builders.
All of this Is forbidding, ar'd, sage
jrush land and without water is ab
solutely useless, but with water
filled with promises and untold
wealth.
Within a short time there will be
no desert Wft In Umatilla county,
The transformation !s so rapid that
ir will have been wiped off the map
before we are aware.
IX DEFENSE OF FORESTRY.
The Boise Capital News, one of the
best papers in the inland empire. Is
:tterly opposed to the forestry pol
icy of the government on the alleged
ground that this policy Is detrimen
tal to the interests of Idaho.
Does not the Capital News look
forward to a future for Idaho? Does
it consider today and today's inter-
eats as being supreme over the Inte
sts of all future generations? Would
ic permit the depletion. In fact the
Jestruction of all the magnificent
fjrests of Idaho by the present g.
gantic syndicates who are cornering
all the timber land?
Would it not be saving something
for the next generation? Would It
not husband the forests and ranges
and make them resources of the fu
ture as well as of today? Would it
not protoct the rights of the mass of
tlw people of Idaho from the selfish
ness of the corporations which seek
to monopolize the state's richest and
most precious properties?
Here Is what the Capital News says
Of the forestry and range poVcy of
the government, a statement which
.he Kast Oregonlan sincerely believes
the Boise paper will live to regret:
"In the first place the forest reserve
policy aa administered is wrong In
principle: In the second place, It Is
wrong in Its application, and in the
third place, It works an injury to
ear!y every Industry of the state,
"It Is wrong In principle because
it U conducted withoat law and
places the people at the mercy of an
Irresponsible bureau In the selection
of whose offices the people have
had no choice. It . is wrong
in its application because In
competent, uninformed, political
haiiKera-on are often placed in posl-'
tlons of grave responsibility to be
come accusers, prosecutors, court.
Jury and executioners over citizens
and over industries of which they
know nothing about.
vit does an Injury to every Indus
try of the state by withdrawing from
this Mate great natural resources
Hint every other state previous to the
present time lias enjoyed without
charge, freely and without restric
tion, and It Imposes a burdensome
tax upon people here tn addition to
withdrawing these free natural re
sources, thus Imposing a double bur
don upon the building up of a com
monwealth In this new country; It
retards settlers, dlifcourafjes miners
and prospectors. Increases the price',
not only of timber taken from re
serves for local use, but advances the
price of the timber holdings of vast
corporations and timber barons,
whoso product is saved from compe
tition." Suppose all western papers held
tlvs view of one of the greatest nnve
ments of the present age, that of
saving the forests and the streams
and range for future development
and use. Suppose this sentiment pre
vailed In the west and congress and
the departments were forced to fore
go any further efforts to save thesa
priceless resources of the country.
How long would It be until the west
would be plundered 'by the land syn
dicates, beyond any possible hope of
recovery?
Does the News believe In Irriga
tion, the means by which Idaho Is
being reclaimed from a desert? Cer
tainly. Then how would It husband
water for future Irrigation If It al
lowed land syndicates to corner all
the forests, stream sources, water
sheds and other natural water sup
plies? The course of the News Is extreme
ly inconsistent, It would seem.
The west needs forestry, range
preservation, stream preservation, Ir
rigation, reclamation, more than any
other section of the country. Will
the west destroy the very means by
wh'ch these are to be secured?

A little boy went to bed shudder
ingly, and covering up his head
cried bitterly for fear that satan, a
great, big, black something, would
carry him off and eat him up alive
or cast him into a dungeon for hh
alleged sins.
Sins? Great heavens, child, what
have you ever done? How have you
s'nned? What wrong have you done,
you merry, light-hearted, buoyant
elf?
What have you done to be thus
shuddering with fear? Why should
your heart be filled with foreboding
and terror? Why not go to sleep
without a pang and sleep until day
light calls you with the birds and
bees and morning breezes? What
dark crime have you committed that
your life should be shadowed with
fear and your mind filled with grew
some pictures?
Th's fear will cling to you; It will
be Impossible to shake it off, dear;
so don't let it come upon you. You
have done nothing; you are Innocent;
you have done nothing for which to
be afraid: you have no reason to
fear the dark; there is a great, lov
Ine God about" you, In the darkness
and In the daylight. You know
nothing of sin or of the world; you
are not responsible; you are not guilty
of anything; so do not fear; be good
and kind and loving and true but do
not be afraid.
Let those whose hands are stained
with the touch of the world do the
shuddering. Let those who feel tn!
need of nunishment. tremble and
Imagine things In the darkness.
Ton are Innocent, child. There Is
nothing to harm you.
Better far be a aheepherder, safe

The one who best reads the poem
Is he wllh the poet heart.
The thoughts thai are rarest and

Arc deepest from sight .Interred,
The song in the soul of the singer
Is never heard.
Some yearnings may not be spoken;
Some loves tire so wholly blessed.
Some dreams are so tinged with
heaven
They never can be expressod.
We miss the Intangible something
Dehlnd the veil of the world.
The song In the soul of the singer
Is never heard.
We meet, but are veiled in spirit,

A realm of our Inmost beings
where we are alone, alone..

LITTLE. THIXGS.
A good-bye kiss is a little thing.
With your hand on the door to go,
But It takes the venom out of the sting
Of a thoughtless word or a cruel fling
That you made an hour ago.
A kiss of greeting Is sweet and rare,
After the toll of the day.
But It smooths the furrows out of the
care
And lines on the forehead you once
called fair,
In the years that have Town away.
Tis a little thing to say, "You are
kind
I love you, my dear," each night;
But it sends a thrill through the
heart, I find,
For love is tender, as love is blind,
As we climb life's rugged height.
We starve each other for love's ca
ress; '
We take but do not give;
It seems so easy some soul to bless,
But we dole love grudgingly, less and
less,
Till 'tis bitter and hard to live.

Let me be swift lo seek the right,
Let me not falter, tho'the night
Darkens the ways of Thy design.
Set Thou upon my heart a sign
That I may grope Into the light
Give me strong courage In the fight
That champions Thy cause divine.

BLOOD FILLED WITH UIUC ACID
Rheumatism comes from aa excess of uric acid in the blood. Thii acid
circulating through the system acts as an Irritant to the different muscles,
nerves, bones and tissues of the body, and produces the inflammation and
swelliuj; of the joints and the sharp, cuttiny pains characteristic of the dis
ease. When the blood is overburdened with uric acid it continually grows
weaker and more acrid, and poorer in nourishing qualities. Then Rheuma
tism becomes chronic, and not only a painful, but a formidable and danger
ous disease. Sometimes the heart is attacked, the general health is affected,
and the oils and fluids which lubricate the muscles and joints are destroyed
by the acrid matter which the blood is constantly depositing in them ; the
muscles shrink and lose their elasticity, the coating of the joint becomes
hard and thick, and'often the sufferer is left a hopeless cripple. S. S. S.
attacks the disease at its head, goes down into the circulation, and by neutral
izing and removing the uric acid from, the
circulation and building up the win, acna
