BEST snow IS THE V RECORD BREAKING CROWDS WITNESS MILE LONG PARADE bcllH-Moto Show Wlira rrulno for Splendid Appearance Rest Circus Ever Seen Here Is Verdict of Many Truly "A Circa Beautiful" Every tiling in Connection with the liilC Show Iii Spick and Span: Sclls-Floto, "the circus beautiful," Is In Pendleton. The Pendleton kid, regardless, of age, Is In his glory today. The whole show, just as advertised apparently, arrived bright and early. The parade was pulled off at the appointed time and much to the de light of more than 3000 people who lined the streets. Not one word of disappointment .was heard from any one. But words of praise were nu merous. The show is larger and apparently better than last year. And the same beautiful characteristics are to be it-en. The animals are well fed, the wagons are clean and the performers are neatly dressed. Several hundred witnessed the per formance this afternoon, but the big crowd will be tonight. ScllM-Floto Ilcttt of All. "When the Sells-Fioto show starts all other circuses get the gait and are left standing sideways," remarked a stranger when he saw the parade go by this morning. "I've seen all the circuses In the country," Jje con tinued, "on both sides of the water, but the Sells-Fioto show has got 'em all 'phoning for the ambulance. There ero some bigger circuses, but there Is something more to a show than two square miles of canvas and a parade that has to have wireless communlca tlon between the wagons to keep from getting the distance flak. From the heralds to the steam piano, take it from me, the Solls-Floto show has the others watching the clock." After viewing the mile-long parade with its troops of beautiful horses, ek-gant cages, splendidly equipped ve hides, well trained bandx, handsome men nnd women, herds of elephants, open rages showing lions, tigers and other denizens of the Jungles of the world, the reporter wus ready to put down a bet on what the stranger said In comparing the Pells-FIoto shows with other circuses now before the public. Hie Afternoon Performance There Is a jrood deal more about the Sells Fioto show than appears on the bills. The performance opens with Eva Goldman, the little girl who literally sings to "beat the band." Five minutes before the big show starts, she stands In the center of the multi tude and with a voice that is at once strong nnd sweet, actually makes her self heard above the band of 40 pieces. Then follows a porado around the hlppolrome trark, a congress of na tions being depleted by the georgeous ly caparisoned elephants, camels. SOO horses and 400 people a glittering, glowing, golden pageant, resplendent In silk and plush and 'bespangled beauties, Everythlg looked new an clean, with beautiful representing the best of every nation on earth. Tho Hide snow. Don't miss the side show, above all things. It Is by far tho best ever brought here by a circus. There are 30 stages and no freaks. No moun tains of flesh, no living skeletons, and no monstrosities to give you bad dreams and drive you off the water wagon. W. H. McFarland Is in charge and he features the Harry Harper Georgia Minstrels. Tbe circus Is at the ball grounds and the show tonight starts at o'clock. 8 AS TO MEASURES. Judiciary Amendment No. 304 votes Yes. This amendment is in the Interest of speedy and less costly Justice, both If A SURGICAL OPERATION to the taxpayers and the Recused it Is adopted, a law can be made when ever It Is wise to dp so, combining the offices of county and circuit Judge In any county. In several of the most thickly populated counties it should bo done now, but the constitution should be amended first. Terms of court could be held oftener in such counties, trials would not be so long delayed and the expense would be less. Where there are only two reg ular terms of court a year prisoners are often kept In Jail from six months to a year before they can be tried which Is a great Injustice to them as well as a great expense to the county. Peoples' Power League Measures On pages 29 to 104 of the book sent you by the secretary of state you will see who are members of the league and the arguments offered for Its measures. You will recognize the names of many men whom you know have been working and spending their money freely for years to lncreuse tho people's Dower In Oregon. For tho most part they are the same men who prepared and offered the Initiative and Referendum amendment In 1902, Direct Primary law In 1904, Local Initiative and Referendum and City Chatter amendments In 1906. Many of them besan this work with the Australian Ballot League in 1889. Every measure they have offered in the past has added greatly to the power of tho people and cut down the power of the political machines and bosses, and all have been declared to be unconstitutional. These men be lieve the following four measures tho league offers this year will complete the system of laws necessary to give the people of Oregon direct and ef fective methods of quickly controlling their government and its officers, and will muke it Impossibly to cvtr resur rect a political boss or machine in Oregon: Recall Amendment, on which No. 324 Votes Yes, Is to give the people power to discharge any public officer. The bill for Instructing the legis lature to elect the people's choice for United Stajes senator, on which No. 328 votes Yes, will meet your appro val If you believe the legislature should always elect the senator whJ receives the people's vote at the June election. Proportional Representation amend ment, on which No. 328 votes les. will allow such laws to be made that minorities can elect their fair share of the members of the legislature un 1 ft Sale Go Quick" Skirt These are unequaled, because the best. The amendment wil also allow a simple registration law to be made requiring u voter to live and register in his pre clnct a reasonable time before tho election at which ho offers to vote, None of these things can be done un til the constitution Is amended. Huntley bill, on which No. 330 votes Tes, Is to make it possible for a poor man to run for office on equal terms with a rich man so far as money Is concerned, by limiting the amount any candidate may spend. Like the Direct Trlmary law, it is a very long bill and full of details, but could not be made shorter and do the work. Also like the Direct Primary law, the legislature would not pass It. Sincerely yours for' the Peoples' Power In government, W. S. U'REN. O. D. TEKL. TREASURER SHOULD COLLECT. Eastern People Puzzled Over Queer Oregon Laws. Since eastern people have com menced to flock to this country In large numbers the county treasurer has had his hands full of trouble. Of course most of these people who are coming buy homes or Invest In lands and naturally have to pay taxes, says the Salem Statesman. Nearly all of them come from states where the taxes are paid to the county treasurer direct and this Is the office they flock to as a matter of habit. It's a curious bland smile thnt spreads over the honest faces of theso people form ttie east when they are politely informed that they will have to go to the sheriff to set tle that difference. He is the fellow above all county officers that they seek to avoid and when they fully understand after con siderable persistence on the part of the treasurer that the sheriff first handles the tax money they reluctant ly take leave for the new Innovation. As there are more eastern people coming to this country now than ever before this article may serve as a gentle reminder of what to expect when tax time comes around. Portland City Council Considers IIu mane Proposition. That Portland may soon own farm where city horses may be put out to pasture, where the city ca raise Its own supply of hay and where horses can be bred for city service was advocated in the city council yes terday afternoon by Councilman Dris coll In tin- course of the debate upon Mayor line's veto to the ordinance uthorlzinir tho sale of an old horse says the Oregon Dally Journal. Drlscoll's remarks were listened with favor bv the mayor and th eouncllmen, and something of the kin may be done In the near future, For some time Superintendent Don oldson of the street cleaning depart ment, bus endeavored to have the city purchase a tract of land near the city here horses can be handled properly nd where the city can raise Its own supply of hay, his Idea being to turn out all of the city horses to pasture for a certain period each year. Ffom n economic standpoint Donaldson says the city would soon be saving money on such a venture. In the council yesterday Driscoll said that the city now owns enough horses to warrant purchasing a place here they can pasture. He spoke for several minutes on the project, nd his remarks were listened to by the other members, and from time to me Mayor Lane nodded his head In greement to the plan. ' Driscoll favors having a tract where II worn-out -horses can be properly ared for until they have recovered sufficiently to be put back to work Donaldson believes that if the place is bought a certain section can be plant ed with hay. He favors building a warehouse in the city where the hay can be stored, easy of access to the va rious city departments, thus saving a large amount of money spent each year for food for the horses. While no definite action was taken in the matter yesterday, It Is believed that the project now started will be taken up In earnest by the eouncllmen and carried to completion before the year Is out.
