That Dr. Henry Waldo Coe, who
between Inking after his Umatilla

practice and other enterprises man
ages to find time to edit the Medical
Sintlncl, deserves high rank as un
unconscious humorist was made evi
dent In the latest Issue of his medi
cal Journul which, while firing an
other broadside In his wordy duel
with Dr. II. C. Coffey, grimly recounts
the details of Dr. Cne's calm and cor
dial invitation to his oponent to assist
In the elaborate preparations the Sen
tinel Is making for the professional
Interment of the president of the Or
egon Medical association.
Dr. Coe makes no secret of his ab
sorbing passion for the possession of
the Coffey scalp which he considers
would make a splendid addition to his
collection of physiological curiosities.
The Sentinel's latest charge Is that
Dr. Coffey In his position as state
medical examiner Is notoriously un
friendly to graduates of Oregon
schools. So open Is this position of
tin- medical examiner says the Sen
tinel that out of recent 23 graduates
from the Institutions of this state
only three have been granted Oregon
diplomas,'
To assist him In finding out Just
why such facts should exist Dr. Coe
called upon Dr. Coffey. His Invita
tion was gentlemanly, courteous a
model or Chosterfieldlan correspon
dence. So was Dr. Coffey's reply,
which indicated that that gentleman
had no hankering to participate in
the proceedings of his own profes
sional demise. The Information was
not forthcoming and Dr. Coe, since
there was nothing else to do, has pub
lished the correspondence In the lat
est edition of the Sentinel.
Desldes tbe alleged prejudice
against Oregon graduates. Dr. Coe
also accuses Dr. Coffey of unprofes
sional ethics of lurid forms of self
exploitation, of rate cutting and fec
dlvlslon the latter charge being
worded to Include an unfair division
of fees.
Dr. Coffey when asked his opinion
of the latest attack In the discussion
which Is now focussing the attention
of the medical profession upon the
two warriors, declined further discussion.

cept that several new Ideas are to be
presented for consideration and ills

to secure an approximate estimate of
the number of boxes of each variety
of apples grown in the valley during
the season so that whenever buyers
ask for an estimate of the year's crop
it can easily be given. To secure '.his

OPENS l'ALL SESSION
States circuit court of appeals handed
down an opinion today fully sustain
ing Circuit Court Judge rrltchanl In
the appointment of receivers to wind
up the affairs of liquor monopoly of
the commonwealth.
There was no dissenting opinion,
Chief Justice Melville W. Fuller and
Judge Ertmond Waddlll, Jr., sustain
ing the law as propounded b Judge
Iloyd. As counsel for the state, W.
M. Stevenson of ISennctsvllle, S. C,
asked for a stay of Judgment In order
to prepare an appenl. The court al
lowed him 40 days.
The decision is a matter of para
mount Importance In South Carolina,
where the dispensary has long been
the object of attack. Its failure to
serve as a temperance measure, along
with charges of graft, caused a re
vulsion of feeling, which resulted in
the pasage of a law to abolish it as a
state Institution, at the same time
permitting towns and counties to de
ride by popular vote whether or not
they desire to retain It under local
option or county management.
Some kind of growers' pool will
likely be arranged at the meeting In
the court house and It is expected
that from 10 to 2.1 per cent advace
In prices can bo secured by coopera
tion of growers.

Xew York, Sept. 18. There was a
big smash in Wall street yesterday.
Fully 1000 straw hats went down to

by the financial district for the end
of summer headgear, and numerous
brokers who ventured Into the region
of the bears and bulls In defiance of
the rule, soon saw their "straws"look

PHUIT C.KOWKUS' UNION
Walla Walla, Sept. 18. For the
purpose of organizing an apple grow
ers' combine to secure more uniform
and equitable prices and also to com
bat the recent advance In transporta
tion rates, a special meeting of Wal
la Walla valley fruit growers will be
held In the court house at 1 o'clock
Monday.
The plan of organization will like

men In other sections of the state, ex-
Washington, Sept. IS. Many dis
tinguished physicians, sociologists and
men of prominence In other walks of
life are already in the national cap
ital to take part In next week's
World's Congress on Tuberculosis.
F.vcry great nation on the earth will
have representation at the meeting
and will add Its influence to the move
ment for a world-wide warfare on the
white plague.
Hundreds of exhibits pertaining to
the anti-tuberculosis campaign are
now being Installed. Among the re
sults that are expected to follow from
these exhibits are mentioned:
Sanitary dwellings and house fur
niture for the working classes.
Sanitary passenger coaches.
Advanced and accurate Instruction
of school children In the methods of
preventing consumption.
Kradiiiillon of tuberculosis in cat
tle. Construction of the most advanced
sanatoria the world has ever known.
Construction of model factories and
workshops.
America will reap the first fruits of
all these advaces. Physicians and
sociologists assert that, through tills
congress and os a direct result of the
prize competitions, the fight for the
eradication of consumption in this
country w ill be advanced many years,
The prizes that are offered will pit
nations, municipalities and Individ
uals against each other. Thev will
develop utilities that will protect the j
healthy, heal the sick, decrease the I
nation's death rate and add to the
national wealth.
As this congress will eclipse all
others of its kind ever held nnywhere,
so does' the list of prizes surpass In
value and In wisdom of selection those
offered by previous congresses. Es
pecially evident Is the regard for the
health and strength of the nation's
working men and their families.
"The Itoyal Chef" Is down for 9
visit to Pendleton and will appear at
the new Oregon theater on Saturday
September 19. The music of the play
h not only extremely catchy, but has
scored number for number with any
ever written for a single production,
in many a day. The scenic effects
are described as great and tne com
pany with Win. II. Con ley in the lead
ing role unusually capable. The lo
cale of the "Koyal Chef" Is the myth
ical Isle of tioolong, over which the
Uaja rules in exalted dignity; find
ing his ciuf has attempted to poison
him, he has the rascal beheaded and
orders Lord Mito, his prime minis
ter, to find him another before sun
down or suffer a like fate. The prime
minister, fears It Is a hopeless .task,
but Just as his time Is about up ho
Is saved by the unexpected appear
ance of Hclnricn Lemphauser, of Chi
cago, who Is at once promoted to the
position of Koyal Chef. The new
chef turns out to be a joke-smith, and
around him revolves all the Incidents
that show clever dramatic construc
tion. The opera is staged in fine style,
both in costumes and every accessory
required to give It proper setting,
while the specialties, chorus, dancers
and supernumeraries meet every re
quirement, and In point of numbers
exceeds any that is usually require!
in musical comedy. It Is claiming a
good deal to say that there have been
new Ideas evolved In tills class of
popular entertainment, but the claim
Is certainly substantiated In "The
Uoya I Chef" which Alan Dale, the
well known Xew York critic, pro
nounces as "bright, cheery and enticing."
