(Speciol Correspondence.) Oregon Agricultural College, Cor vallis, Jan. 14. At the rec?nt meet ing of the Board of Regents of the Oregon Agricultural College it was found necessary, after a thorough in vestigation of the affairs of the col lege, to petition the state legislature for a considerable increase in the Mate appropriations. The Board will ask for an increase of $50,000 a year for maintenance; $30,000 per year for equipment, $45,00 for a Horti cultural building, $55,000 for a cen tral Agricultural building, $35,000 for a central heating plant, and J35, 00 for an Armory and drill hall. L'p to this time most of the sup port has come from the United States government, but the attendance is now so large and is increasing so rapidly that the support from this source has become entirely Inade quate. President, Kerr's report which has just been made public contains some very interesting information regard ing the work done at the college and the conditions which prevail there. The report ahows that the Increase in the attendance during the past four years is double that of any of the segregated land grant college except Washington state college. That in the last college year the increase in attendance was more than double that of V"a.-hi:igton state college, and as high as five times as great as that of gome of the other colleges. Another f.-ature pointed out In the report is the great improvement and extension of the work in agriculture. During the past two year? the num ber of courses in agriculture have been increased from 40 to 169. Dur ing this time the increase in the num ber af students pursuing the degree course in Agriculture was 111 per cent while the actual amount of work given was increased 900 per cent. An Increase almost as gTert marks the progress of the work in Mechan ical Arts and in the School of Domes tic Science. now's Tills? In two fast and furlou9 games of basket ball played in the hiffll Hi-lutol gymnasium last evening, the star aggregation of ball tossers from Los Angeles added as many victories to their already long list. Pendleton Academy's five were taken Into camp ly the score of 4 6 to 14 while u team representing the high school was de feated 36 to 7. Though the final scores In both games' were overwhelmingly decisive no one demanded his money back as the games were all and more than had been expected. Roth the Pen dleum teams played with nil the spir it and vim they could muster just as if they t xpected to win. This vus all the audience desired. The brilliant exhibition of the pop ular game put up by the visitors made up for the disappointment In the loss of the contests to the lacol teams, though It was not hard to discover on which side were the hearts of the spectators. Every burst of speed or brilliant playing on the part of the locals and there were several was greeted with deafening cheers In fact at the opening of the sec ond game, when without ony Inter mission the vistors were rushed from the Academy game Into one ngalnst the high school team, reenforced by j Prof Potter of the high school f no- j ulty. and Prof. Grncnwald of the Academy faculty, they were given a j real run for their money. Endurance finally began to tell however, and the I Ijos Angeles players soon settled Into a steady gait which enabled them to roll up a comfortable margin before the close of the last half. Potter nnd Grornwald showed; they were some stars themselves .' while Kimball ami Storie put up the. games of their lives, ! This was the thirty-seventh game j for the Los Angeles players and with one exception every game has result- , ed In a victory. The one exception was In tne game against me .tsii Ington state college nt PuMman. Every' man on the visiting team Is a star and was In the game nt every stage. j The ball would shoot Into the basket from the hands of the players ns If It were impossible for It to go any place else while the passing and team work was a marvel.
