More than 500 American boys under 18 years old, have been discharged bo far from the British army upon re quests from the state department. Most of these boys went to Canada! and misrepresented their ages to re cruiting officers. C Von Klein, sentenced from Multnomah county June IT, 114, for polygamy. His sentence was from one to four years, and, having served his mini mum sentence, he was eligible to pa role. He will work for a company In Minneapolis, his former home. It being the rule of the present admin istration not to pardon or' parole prisoners until they axe assured of employment. The parole was recom mended by the parole board. Von Klein has been a model prisoner. $3500 Germs Figure in Trials. Von Klein was tried and convicted of living polygamously with Miss Ethel Newcomb following their pre tended marriage In San Francisco in October, 1911. When he deserted Miss Newcomb In Portland nbout a week after their pretended marriage he took with him, It was charged. Miss Newcomb's Jewels, valued at $3500. For the theft of these Jewels he was tried twice, the Jury In each case being unable to agree. Three women. Miss Newcomb. Mrs. E. Weber, of Kansas City, and Mrs. Isabella Temple, of Nashville, Tenn , also made complaint to the Portland authorities that Von Klein had swindled them out of Jewels at various times. The total value of the Jewels he Is said to have taken from these women was about 122,000. 15 Years of Crime Charged. He robbed Mrs. Temple, It is said, In Milwaukee, securing her Jewels, valued at about 16500, and all her money, and then disappearing. It Is said, under the pretense that he was going to get a marriage license. "Von Klein's career of premeditat ed crime, covered a period of about 15 years," said Depnty Magulre In op posing leniency by the court, "his first arrest having been made in; Galesburg. 111., In 1898, on a burglary charge. The next year he served a sentence in Toronto for larceny. He was no forced Into a life of crime by necessity or by want, but by choice." I'matllla Prisoners Paroled. Death by star vation through four years of crop failure faces the 75,000 Inhabitants of Curacao Island, in the Dutch West Indies, unless help Is sent them, ac cording to the Right Rev. M. G. Vuyl steke. Catholic Bishop of Curacao, who arrived here seeking aid for the Islanders. "The suffering In my diocese Is fully as terrible as In the war-stricken countries of Europe", said Bishop Vuylsteke, "and all that Is needed to alleviate the conditions there Is bread, seeds, water and food of all kinds. For four years there have been no crops and the Island la turn ing Into a veritable desert." The bishop said that 60,000 color ed people, 15.000 Indians and more than 3000 Holladers were In distress. William Wakins Siik-ldc. VANCOUVER, Wash., cpt.' 8. William Wakins died while being rushed to St. Joseph's Hospital. He was found lying unconscious in his room with a deep gash In his right arm. Death was caused by loss of blood, according to Dr. C. C. Wilcox, the attending physician. Wakins evidently cut himself In the arm with a razor which was ly. ing beside him and Is believed to have been driven by paralysis to commit suicide. He was 76 years old and was well known here. Morton Seeks Highway Connection. MORTON, Wash., Sept. 8. City Attorney Rutherford Is engaged in trying to find a way to permit traf fic over the newly constructed Na tional Park highway to enter Morton the Chicago, Milwaukee ft St. Paul Railway company having forbidden the use of a crossing over the Mor ton & Tacoma Eastern line that Is ne cessary to use In order to enter Mor ton from the north . Operated by an electric motor, a fountain has been Invented that uses the same water repeatedly, so that there Is no appreciable consumption of the supply. Germans Hold Kanicruns, PARIS. Sept. 8. Fighting contin ues in the Kameruns, the Germany colony in Western Africa which tha British and French have been at tempting, since the early part of the war to wrest from the Germans. The ministry of colonies gave out a statement announcing further victories.
