THIE FAN OF MITHRAS
“Worry?” Ethan laughed a high,
shrill bark of a laugh. “Why, Taine
tricked me! He got Uncle down to
some shyster lawyer and wheedled
him into willing him all he had! But
you wait! You'll see! Brains will
settle this thing! [l've never been
beaten yet and I won't be beaten
now!”
“So the kid gets the money!” grunt
ed the detective. “So he gets his year
abroad and all the trimmings after
all!”
“He hasn’t got it yet!” Ethan re
peated over and over in a low mono
tone and, then, as though suddenly
conscious of the peculiarity of his con
duet, he stopped and cast about for a
new topic. “I've got to do something
for my head! I'm nearly crazy with
the pain! These headaches will kill
me!”
“Notice you take quite a lot of pow
ders,” commented the detective. “Why
don’t you go get you one, now? You
look sick!”
“I-=I-—1 think I will—" he turned
and said hesitatingly. “You're wrong
if you think 1 quarreled with Uncle
Taine. 1 didn't! We were just dis
cussing a few business matters.”
“Sure, I understand,” Hurd agreed.
“I just asked because | wanted to
know why your brother was so upsct
the night of the murder.”
Ethan whirled about, his eyes black
with sudden anger.
“So Taine got you to ask me that,
did he? He couldn’t keep his mouth
shut, could he?” he snarled. “He isn't

satisfied with getting all Uncle had,
robbing me of my just dues but that he
had to go telling you that, eh? Maybe
he thinks it isn't safe to have me
around! Listen! You ask him who
found Uncle Taine dead in his bed!”
“That was Rawa!”
“Yes, and Rawa is Taine's dog! He
knew that it wasn’t safe to let the ink
dry on that will! He knew! He
needn’t think I'm dumb because I've
kept my mouth shut so far—"
“You better go take your medicine,
man!” Hurd interrupted, “you're
sick!”
“Sick?” Ethan repeated the word as
though he had never heard it before.
“Sure. You don't want to be say
ing the things you have been saying!”
“Ah—"" with an effort he pulled him
self together. “I suppose not. Well—
I guess I'll go take a powder., I'm all
shot to pieces.”
After his conversation with Ethan,
Hurd went upstairs to the Crall's
apartment and at his knock the door
was opened by Sabina Merriman,
“Thought 1 might as well get your
opinion of this business downstairs,”
he remarked and without waiting for
an invitation to enter, he stepped into
the room, glanced around, caught
sight of a big chair and proceeded to
make himself comfortable in it.
Sabina stood watching him for a
minute, then as though she had come
to some sort of a mental conclusion,
she shrugged her shoulders and sat
down beside her piano.
“You sing, don’t you?"” the detective
asked, “You and this young man
downstairs, Taine Grant, must have
a lot in common.
If he expected a reply he was dis-
