Caple, Miss Mary Bissett, Beginning next Wednesday, October 20, Dean Rhoda M. White will give a course of lectures in the club rooms of the Y. W. C. A, under the gen eral subject, “Excursions Into Sociology.” There will be ten talks in the course, covering the field of social origins and development. The ten topics will be: “Sociology, Facts, Forces and Functions THE SPOKANE WOMAN Within Its Scope,” “Social Pathology,” “Race and Progress,” “Migration, Remote and Recent,” “Sex and Society, a Study of Marriage, the Family and the Home,” “Politics, Whys and Wherefors,” “In dustry, Personal and Social Economics, Religion,” “Kecclasticism and Industrialism,” “Social Psychol ogy,” “Social Welfare—A Present View.” Dean White has been a professor of sociology and has worked with such men as John R. Collins, Richard T. Ely, Edward A. Ross and Thomas Sew ell Adams. Invitations are being sent out this week to all the men's and women’s organization members of the city, to attend the Open House of the Business and Professional Women's Club next Tuesday night. The new club-rooms on the sixth floor of the Eilers Building will be ready for inspection, having been redecorated and refurnished for the use of the club women. Miss Florence Coffeen heads the com mittee, which will have charge of the party. Mem bers of her committee are Miss Susie Arnott, Miss Bertha Saeger, Miss Margaret Graham and Mrs. J. E. Govett, Musie, cards and refreshments are on the eve ning program, as announced by Miss Jimmie Lane, president of the club. Miss Frank Grippen as pro gram chairman will present Miss Clara Noerenberg, who will read an article by William G. Shepherd en titled “Make Them Work Their Way Out.” The article deals with problems of prison reform. Mrs. Emilie Burcham will read a paper on “The Busi ness and Professional Woman and Education,” and Miss Elizabeth Johnston will have a short article telling “How Julia Marlow Climbed to Fame.” Miss Grippen will review Dorothy Canfield's book, “Her Son's Wife.” TEACHERS’ RECEPTIONS ON SOCIAL PROGRAM Women teachers of the city are to be entertained at the Young Women's Christian Association Sat urday evening. The parlors will be decorated in autumn foliage and flowers, and during the evening a program of orchestral music, readings, games and dancing will be directed by Mrs. R. M. Wil liams, chairman of the hospitality committee. The receiving line will include Mrs. J. M. Richards, president of the Y. W. C. A. board of managers; Mrs. J. M. Simpson, of the Spokane school board; Miss Jimmie Lane, president of the Business and Professional Women's Club; Mrs. R. M. Williams; Mrs. Daniel Morgan; Mrs. James H. Robinson, president, Spokane Council Parent-Teacher Asso ciations; Mrs, Frederick Kennedy, Mrs. Henry M. Hart; Mrs, J. D. Meyers; Miss Rosa Langley, presi dent of the Ella Flagg Young Club, and the mem bers of her executive board; Miss Margery Morrow, president of the Grade School Teachers' Associa tion, and her board; Miss Laura Smith; Miss Dotha Varker and the staff of the Y. W. C. A. Miss Edith Jimison will lead the games, and the plunge will be open for guests who wish to swim, The unusual number of new teachers and the transfers made necessary by the big building pro gram have added interest to the many receptions for teachers given by parent-teacher associations in the various schools during the last three weeks. At the Adams school on Thursday evening Miss Mabel Strites was greeted as the new principal, a lovely corsage presented to her, and flowers to all the teachers in the school. The Adams double quar tet of male voices was presented in several num bers, and the address of the evening, by Mrs. James H. Robinson, was on the topic “Pull Together.” Mrs, Dale Rankin presided. The Willard circle met on the same night, with an attendance of more than two hundred, greet ing four new teachers. Mrs. Victor A, Finrow was in the chair, and Mrs. Fred Slee, vice president of the council, gave greetings from that body and from North Central, where she is president. At the Audubon Mrs. Elmo James presented a good musical program on Tuesday evening. A. G. Watkins welcomed the teaching staff, and Miss Maude Stinson responded. The school board and the P.-T. A. council were represented in greetings, and Mrs. A. G. Watkins sang two vocal numbers, Readings, pianologues, and piano solos were in cluded in the entertainment. Miss Rosa Langley, new principal at Sheridan, was introduced to her patrons by Mrs. E. J. Protto, president of the cir cle; at the Bemiss an informal reception on Mon day night filled the room to welcome several new members of the staff, with Jack Arthur presiding, and Mrs. Francis Bobo in charge of the social arrangements. The Arlington, South Regal, Gar field and several other grade school associations are holding meetings this week. SANDPOINT CIVIC CLUB HAS“IDAHO” LUNCHEON The Sandpoint Civie Club gave an “Idaho” lun cheon, Monday October 4th, which was attended by women from all parts of the county. Mrs. Guy Helphrey was chairman in charge of the arrange ments for the meeting which was to inaugurate the “Idaho Buy at Home Movement.” Her committee included Mrs. D. Rowlands, Mrs William Cady and Mes. O, M. Gennestad. Mrs. R. L. Jones had charge of the table decorations and favors and Mrs. Charles Pike had the following committee assisting her as the table committee: Mrs. Orville Frazier, Mrs. Edgar Aaron, Mrs. Henry Traue, Mrs. Levi Rob inson. o e o Mrs. Earl Farnum, president of the club, pre sided and introduced the speakers, and Mrs. Hel phrey spoke on Idaho Products, and a number of local candidates for office made five-minute talks. Mrs. T. L. Greer was appointed corresponding secretary to succeed Mrs. R. 8. McCrea, resigned. New members admitted to the club were: Mrs. Guy Ross, Mrs. J. A. Foster, Mrs. Stanley Bower and Mrs. O. J. Bandelin, Lohengren Study Theme Mrs. Louis Vogel will be hostess to the Fortnight ly Study Club at a 1 o'clock luncheon at her Nata torium Park home on Monday. Continuing the study of grand opera, “Lohengrin” will be the theme, being read by Mrs. H. G. Lanahan, Mrs. (. J. Winter, Mrs. W. H. Ude and Mrs. T. G. Aston. Mrs. Winter is leader for the day. UNITARIAN WOMEN STUDY ORGANIZATION Study of their organization, something of its his tory and interesting sidelights on some of its ac tivities, will be combined in the programs of the Women's Alliance of the Unitarian Society this year. In addition to the general program the Mary Ellen Reed Circle will have a complete study pro gram for its Monday meetings, and Elizabeth Com stock Circle will have literary and social activities on third Wednesdays. The managing board of the Woman’s Hotel met on Tuesday for its regular bi-monthly session, with Mrs. Phil T. Becher presiding. Thirteen members Wwere present. It was reported that the hotel rooms have been well filled in recent weeks, but that a few desirable rooms are vacant.
