14 Sun Yat Sen and His Chinese Republic The awakening of the sleeping gi ants of the Orient has turned the eyes of the world to the East, giving an un easy self-consciousness to Western lands. The yellow races, dormant through almost all that the Western world knows of history, are on the march. Moral forces are moving them, forces strange to our civiliza tion, and among the dominant per sonalities of their new day Sun Yat Sen has been conceded preeminence. Paul Linebarger, in his authoritative biography, “Sun Yat Sen and the Chi nese Republic,” has done much more than write the engrossing story of this man of peace who became a man of war in order to bring democracy to that picturesque empire of the Celes tials. Sun Yat Sen, the little plow-boy of Blue Valley, became that almost myth ical figure of power that has repre sented the emerging modern China to our alien minds. The Century Com pany published this book. While we are talking about China— it should interest all students of the Orient to know that Harry A. Franck is writing the best travel stuff now being produced. His “East of Siam,” published by the Century Company, was recently reviewed in this column, and more people should read “Wan dering in Northern China.” Franck claims merely to set down on his pages, in the same leisurely way in which he wanders through strange lands, the things that interested him. He has a happy faculty for avoiding all the places where local statistics are given out, and turning up at the Churches The Ladies’ Aid division of Central M. He makes no pre tense of “interpreting” the East to you; he tells what he saw, in the man ner of the born storyteller. “You can easily tell how long a man has been in China by how much he doesn’t know about it—if he knows almost every thing he has recently arrived; if he admits that he knows nothing what ever about the Chinese people and their probable destiny, you may take it for granted that he has been there a long time.” Doubleday, Page and Company are announcing a new volume of Kipling's verse, to be issued this fall, called “Sea and Sussex.” Mr. Kipling has been very hard on America and Amer icans in his recent writing, but we will probably live it down—and con tinue to read his stuff as avidly as ever. While “Soldiers Three” re mains on the bookshelves of the world, Kipling is licenced to dislike anything or anybody he pleases! According to the Appletons the Boy Scout’'s year book published this fall is going to contain many fine il lustrations, and a jollier collection of funny stories than ever before. “THE DAYS OF THEIR YOUTH” By Alan Sullivan, (The Century Company—s2.oo.) Beyond life, beyond fear, anxiety, good or evil, Paul Rennet watched his family live through the years that fol lowed his death. An extraordinary in timate knowledge of every thought, an understanding of their motives greater than their own, came to him as he followed them through youth to ma turity. Nothing they did or said could hurt him, even though he caught the subtle undertones of seif-interest that appeared in the moment of his pass ing. Paul understood. Mary, his wife, found a new lover. John went on building the career of an engineer, and women loved him. Gert rude was the thinker, the striking personality of the family, engrossed with the large phases of political life and feminist movement. Only to his little Julia, the delicate, sympathetic soul, did Paul remain an ever-present reality. This is a strange, appealing book, from the angle of those who must continue to live, and from the appallingly clear eyes of the unseen observer. The deathless intellect, functioning without the flaws imposed by an imperfect body—the deathless love, unhurt by flaws in imperfect loved ones, Sullivan has given us something to think about, something to comfort past the transitory periods of pain, Signing off, LUCY M.
