A look that re minded her that she, too, had boasted of honor. “Mr, Hurd, I was confused at first,” she faltered, “but 1 won't let Taine take the blame and punishment of a thing he has not done! He didn't kill his uncle—" “He says he did,” interrupted the detective harshly, “and 1 have enough evidence that, along with a confession, would satisfy any jury on earth! Oh, 1 tell you, you don't know what you are doing!” “Maybe, Miss Merriman, you have a better solution?” Hurd's voice vas acid. “I? But—" “Sabina'!” Taine stopped her. “I know it is hard for you to understand this, but you must not interfere! Do you understand! You must not!” The girl caught her breath in a sob at his words. “Taine,” she said, “I never loved you as 1 love you now, but there isn’'t any use! You can’t shield me any longer! Mr. Hurd, I killed Taine’s uncle! 1 did it because 1 wanted Taine to have the money—" “No! That is confusion added to confusion,” it was Rawa who spoke. “These two love. They are in perfect harmony! It is not fitting that I, a student of peace, should allow this harmony to be broken. What is life?
