Mining News. ONE YEAR QLD. With this issue of the Mining News the paper will have run a year. Found ed for the purpose, primarily at least, of informing the investing public of the matchless mineral resources of Idaho county, and especially that portion lying , betweep the main Salmon and the mid dle fork of the Clearwater, tfiis object has never been lost sight of for a mo ment. Although at times this paper has been forced to deviate for a time from its chosen course to combat flag rant public abuses, it has kept these resources and their development con stantly before the eyes of the mining world. In this we are glad to say that with few unimportant exceptions, we have had the hearty co-operation of the operators and citions generally, with the result that, insofar at least as Elk City district is concerned, it has been taken from the position of the moat un favorably known district in the county, and been plaeed second in importance only to Thunder Mountain, with the certainty th$t before her paper's second birthday she will at least divide honors even with that great camp. Like all human affairs, however, in this as in other enterprises, causes for regret mingle with causes for congrat ulation, chief of which in our case is the lack of ability on the part of the editor to do full justice to the splendid natural resources and conditions which surround him, and the indefensible acts of certain gentlemen in public life which made it necessary for the paper to subject them to severe criticism. In the former case, all we can say is that the editor will continue to do his best in the position accident has placed him; as to the latter we hope no occasion will arise for other than friendly criticism. Should such occasion present itself, however, it will be dealt with unsparingly. A PROTEST. The Mining News is forced, in self defense and in defense of this district, to enter a protest against the practice of two of its exchanges in appropriat ing mining news from its columns and rehashing and otherwise altering it till it ceases to convey any sense, or to possess the slightest rational meaning for anyone familiar with the industry or the surrounding conditions of the news matter mentioned. Both of these exchanges pose as technical mining journals of a high order, which may or may not account for the lack of sense conveyed in their record of mere every day happenings, and their lack of hon esty in appropriating to their own use the capital of another newspaper. While those good people were content to steal the item and republish it in its entirety, we did not object, but we do object to revision at the hands of the janitor who might, in a spasm of mis taken righteousness, give credit to this paper for one of his startling produc tions, and being an amateur ourselves, naturally our literary productions are not of that powerful structure that can, with impunity, withstand the assaults nf the amateur.
