SENATORIAL ASPIRANTS. Got. Clitrkf. »n«1 Hon. J»«. K Jodm Op«> tlin Ctinpilgn nt Searcy. The campaign for the United States senatorship was opened at Searcy on the 17th inst. Ex-Gov. Clarke led off, arguing against long continuance in office. Of Senator Jones’ support of the Wilson bill the speaker declared lugar was taxed, and that the lumber interest of Arkansas suffered by this jneasure becoming a law. Gov. Clarke 'then referred to the senator’s opposi tion to the ^Hatch anti-option bill, which had passed the house and was defeated in the senate. Senator Jones should have voted for this measure, and left it to the courts to determine Its legality. The speaker referred to Senator Jones’ bill proposing a bond issue of $500,000,000 as being in the interest of the bondholders. Gov. Clarke advocated the Nicaraguan ca nal, declaring his opponent had failed to give it any support during his long service in congress. On the other hand he had opposed it on the consti tutional objection that taxes raised in the United States should not be ex pended away from home; he was glad he had at last converted the senator to advocacy of the canal. The speaker dwelt at length upon the senator's record in congress. Referring to the democratic platform declarations against trusts and monoponies Gov. Clarke said Senator Jones was a di rector and stockholder in a company created under the laws of New Jersey for the baling of cotton by the round lap process, reading from the testi mony in the Collier Texas suit against the American Cotton Company on the point that there had been a combine effected in the round bale interests, including the American Cotton Compa ny, the Standard Circular Cotton Com pany of England and two other com panies. Senator Jones opened by declaring that Gov. Clarke had failed to prove that the American Cotton Company was a trust. He referred to his long service in the senate and the fact that he had twice been placed at the head of the national democratic committee. If there was anything wrong with his record he wanted the people to so de clare, but if he had been true to his trust he asked for their endorsement. * “If you would make glad the hearts of republican leaders in congress, let »them know you repudiate me,” said ■ *thfe senator. As to his position on the Nicaraguan canal the speaker said he opposed the proposition to issue $1, .10,000 in bonds to aid the enterprise, ut was in favor of the United States Gding and owning the canal with out asking the consent of Great Brit ain. As to the round-lap bale com pany, the speaker declared that it does not suppress competition, but pro motes it; that it saves money for the producer. The senator stated that while governor, Clarae raised assess incuts oi rauroau property ana, arter his term expired, appeared as a rail road attorney to secure a reduction of the assessments. Senator Jones then took Gov. Clarke to cask for appear ing as the attorney of the Hudson bank to collect $65,00u on old bonds, against the state, the bonds being a relic of carpet-bag days, said the sena tor. As to the Hatch anti-option bill, which sought to license brokers, the senator said his position was that con gress had no right to levy a tax ex cept for the purpose of raising revenue. In his rejoinder Gov. Clarke said he had appeared in the railroad tax case openly as an attorney. After re tiring from office, he opened a law of fice to practice his profession In order to make a living for his family. He could not get into a trust, and had to earn some money. As a member of the assessment board while governor he assessed the railroad property at what he believed was right under the showing made at the time. Afterwards ^ khe principle of taxation as laid down by the supreme court had enabled him as an attorney to be instrumental in securing a reduction for his clients. He said his record was open to inspec tion. He went into the details of his connection with the Hudson bank bond claim as attorney, having be come associated with Hon. T. C. Mc Rae in that capacity at the later’s so licitation. He detailed how the bonds had been exchanged through a state agent, who palmed off invalid bonds for valid ones, which the record shows. The state debt board had said the Hudson bank claim was a just one, but the bonds had been destroyed. Judge H. C. Caldwell had declared the debt was an honest one. but that he had no jurisdiction to compel the state to pay it. As to the senator’s denial that the American Cotton Company is a trust. Gov. Clarke said the fact was raised that the presses were not on the mar ket for sale, but were operated by the company or leased, that by this method it is possible for the company to event ually monopolize the baling of cotton. 1 During a Cow, Dairying' is something- new in this part of t^e country. \'ery few farm ers know of the real value of a good cow. It is generally considered that a cow is worth from $35 to $40. and if she is a common scrub, she is clear property at that price, if milk Is worth $1 per 100 and a cow cost $40 per year to feed, and the manure pays for the labor (but it does not), the cow that gives 10,000 pounds of milk per year, returns a protit of $60. A cow giving S',000 pounds returns a profit of $10. and one giving 4,000 pounds or less, returns nothing; labor, and stable room about the same, be sides the offspring from the 10,000 pound cow is worth at least $10 per yea-r, and from the 5,000-pounds cow probably $2. and from the scrub, noth ing. Counting the lifetime of a cow l't years, the 10.000-pound cow gives a profit of $700, the 5,000-pound cow $1M0, and the 4,000-pound cow only the value of her calf at birth, and the service fees taken off that amount. I When buying- a cow, we should use the same judgment as we do when buying- a horse. A small scrub horse will sell for $30 to $00; an ordinary farm or driving horse will sell for $100 to $110; but if we want a good draft horse, or a good roadster, we pay $130 to $1200. and a good horse will readilv s>dl for this amount, be cause they are bred to perform the work they are bought for. If this is true of a horse, it is also true of a cow.—Cor. Hoard’s Dairyman.
