ness of his son, who was stricken
with paralysis, but who is now
entirely out of danger.
A “Millionaire Special,” com
posed of a party of northern j
bankers, went north on the Iron j
Mountain Friday noon. They ;
had been touring Mexico and;
were returning to their homes.
Col. W. F. Cody’s (Buffalo
Bill) Wild West show has been
rmnrnnfined in France and all of
the show horses, many of them:
worth over $1,000 each, have!
been shot under official orders on
account of glanders.
John Robinson’s shows will be j
in Walnut Ridge, October 25th,
but not a circus has 'thus far;

The corps of civil engineers;
recently sent here by the Iron
Mountain to make a survey of a
route from this city along the
river to Magness, went into

ing, and the work of running1

Batesville Guard.
C. B. Best of East Newport:
had on exhibition Saturday the j
banner sweet potato so far raised ;
this year. The one mentioned |(
weighed^four and a half pounds,
and was of the Bunch Yam va
riety. Mr Best raised about
300 bushels of these fine pota-,
toes which will be placed on the j
market.
The local lodge of Elks are i
preparing to give a minstrel i
show in Newport that will sur-;
pass all home talent perform
ances. J. M. Stayton, Charies
Movpi- and F. E. Vining have!
been appointed a committee in |
charge of the project, and a per'
cent, of the receipts, probably
50, will be donated to charity, to
be distributed through the New
port Relief Society.
Pleasant Harper a half-witted j
boy who persists in wearing fe-1
male attire, and has visited New-;
port though in boy’s clothes, has
just completed a year’s service
in the Missouri reform school at
Boonville. The theft for which
he was sent up was committed
at Kirkwood, .where he obtained
a position as housegirl, and soon
appropriated a diamond ring. He
has again shown up in this
suburb of St. Louis.
