As soon as the Dingley tariff bill becomes a law, goods will be made in this country and no more import ed. Will that increase the aggre gate of tariff revenue. Have you heard of any one who has lately paid his or their em ployes in gold or advanced the wages of the employes? It seems to have gone entirely out of fashion. With a tariff upon imports, each man whc wants an article of neces sity, made or grown abroad, be he rich or poor, must contribute alike to recoup the wasted treasury. An attempt was made Sunday morniDg to take the life of President Faure, of France. A bomb was thrown uuder his carriage as he was driving to church. He was uninjur ed. Judge Day, Assistant Secretary of State, declares that Rivera and Bacallao, the Cuban patriots, shall not be put to death by Spain. He asserts that the Government will take prompt steps to prevent it. As soon as the Dinglev bill be comes a law prices will go up on the immense stock of imported goods brought into our country, and the consumers must pay the increas ed price. But how will that add to the public revenues? FA T TENIA G A TR US T. Republican Senators definitely committed themselves to legislation in behalf of trusts by voting solidly for the new sugar schedule submit ted by the Finance Committee. A 11 attempts to modify it so that the Sugar Trust would be cut off from all or a part of the monopoly and speculative profits secured to it by the schedule were ineffective. When the Wilson bill was held up in the Senate until a measure of protection was granted to the Sugar Trust the country was scandalized. The Democratic party was denounc ed because of the sin of a few Demo cratic Senators. But the solid strength of the Republican party in the Senate has voted a greatly in creased measure of protection to the Trust. It has increased the out rageous rate embodied in the Ding ley bill. It has given this protec tion to the trust in the knowledge that the trust has prepared to beat the Government out of $12,000,000 by anticipatory importations. Although many Democratic Sen ators heartily indorse the sugges tion of the Ilepullic that the specula tive profits ofjthe Sugar Trust be ab sorbed by an internal revenue tax, it is certain that the amendment offered by Senator Morgan to this effect will be rejected by the Repub licans. The fiat has gone forth from the Republican bosses that the Trust must be taken care of and the mandate will be obeyed. Summed up, the action of the Republicans gives the trust the privilege of importing a year’s supply of sugar at the present rates and of selling that sugar , under a greatly increased protective tariff with a differential in favor of the trust on refined sugar. It gives the trust a monopoly with double profits at the expense of the national treasury for the first year—R-pub le. M ViSK Bi.ufp, May 14, 1S97.
