A Blow From Barbara With the decision of the attacks John De Haven reached a decision regarding letting Barbara know he had returned. He could not go to Mrs. Beckley Hewitt's. That was quite impossible, for he had to be in. Wall Street Monday morning fit to make a fight against the unknown force attacking him. j But he could let her know. So he sent her a telegram announcing his return and saying he was engaged in business matters that would keep him in New York indefinitely. It was, in spite of his pride, an admission, that j he really would like to join her in the mountains, but he did not under- j stand it as such, nor yet did she when she received it. For Barbara had already been ap-: prised of his return and was furious that he had not come to the camp' before going back to Wall Street. She, had been jealous of Wall Street for some time because she felt that he had been giving the best of himself to it. And besides Dawes had told her of such terrible things that hap pened there. She recalled his telling her how men had been crazed by their losses how millionaires had became paupers' how they had rushed out disheveled, hatlcss and coatless, beside them selvesjn their mental distress. And how he \vas down there devoting him self to business when she wanted him with her. Anne Miller had written her early in the week and told her of the bene fit Hogue had derived from his va cation. Anne did not know she was | the first to inform Barbara of the party’s return. Anne referred to; John affectionately and guessed that “J^^nny will be running up there right soon to see you.” She did not; suspect there was anything between: them but the deepest love and affec-j tion. endar, Fan, Blotter and Novelty line. Will assign exclusive terri-j tory in Arkensas. .Contracts to i begin January 1st., 1921. Com-j mission basis, but very liberal. The poignancy of his regret at being un able to see her, the hope that he might, soon, and the longiajj -to bo with her that the words might have conveyed, all escaped her. She be lieved he was remaining in New York because he wanted to stay away from her. She did the worst thing possible. She answered his telegram with an other. Clinton Dawes driving her to a little station Saturday, afternoon to send it. He had returned and gone straight to her, finding, he thought, a warmer welcome than he had pre viously been given. “Don’t worry about me. Am all right. Camp will last three weeks longer. Will see you when I return to New York.” That was Barbara’s message to her husband. Sne,.too, had independence indifference was quite as possible with her as with him. She too, had pride as her message proved beyond a doubt. Clinton Dawes did not know what she sent. He would have been over joyed had he known, but on the way back to Mrs. Beckley Hewitt’s he found her blithe and gay. He had never seen her in just that mood. He believed he had impressed her more favorably of late as they got better acquainted. Half way back they met Bob La Fi.ige and Dix Randall in the engi neer’s high powered car. La Farge and Randall turned about and drove back to the camp behind them. They had a ready explanation that they had merely driven out that far and r.-ould trail them in. Trail them in! Clinton Dawes had heard that much of late. First he had heard it at Newport and now he bad been hearing it here. Many times these two men had trailed him in from places on the road where, it EVERY TASTE. ASK FOR MY OWN BRAND OF “DEBUNTANTE CHOC OLATES.” JACK SCHNEIDER, at "Bcrbig’s, that good drug store." It t seemed to him that most of it was by design. He wondered what their pur j pose was just as they wondered about ; his. However, Clinton Dawes reflected 1 he was making progress. He found it le;s and less difficult to be with ! Barbara and availed himsc If of every opportunity, the espionage of the two men to the contrary notwithstanding. He was certain that Barbara liked him. How much he did not know, did ! not dare to hazard a guess. Tlrey were most congeniel, he was happy : to believe, and this had developed of late until they were very friendly i Indeed. Certain it was that she was i interested in him. He saw that, had always seen it. But how deep was ! that interest? He did not know. He wished he might know whether it was deep enough. Barbara, herself, while gay and lighthearted on her drive with Clin ton Dawes, was angry with her hus band. It had impressed her that he had flouted her. Her, a Kendall! It had not only hurt her feelings, but had wounded her pride, a sensitive thing, and now she had shown him how independent she was. Her tele gram surely would let him know that beyond peradventure of a doubt. He was clever. He could see it. “Camp will last three weeks longer. Will see you when I return to New York.” That ought to be enough to indi cate to him that she was not dying by inches because he had preferred to paw over dusty stocks and bonds in that old Wall Street to spending th« week-end with her. There was a further recovery of approximately 1 cent a pound in the cotton market hire today owing to continuing Liv erpool bpying, increasing optimism with reference to prospects for a set-1 tlemcnt of British labor troubles and covering by shorts. December con tracts sold up to ‘21 cents, making! an advance of 1011 points from the previous close and of ,120 points, or over $16 per bale from the low rec ord of last Monday. The market opened at an advance! of 17 to 50 points on a continuation of the buying movement in progress! at the close yesterday. There were reactions of some 20 or 30 points! shortly after the opening ns a result! of realizing and scattered selling.! Such offerings were readily absoroed, and the covering movement became | excited later owing to persistency] of demand from Liverpool buying for. other foreign account, including Ja pan, and the comparatively small' volume of hedge selling from the! south. , January advanced to 20.75 and March to 20.80; with active months generally showing net gains of 97 to 107 points. Stop orders were uncovered on a scale up and. after their execution, the buying tap-, ered off with last prices showing reactions of some 10 -to 40 points under realizing. RUBEN BUBO. l<M2tf. -----~ --- NEW ORLEANS COTTON Xpw Orleans ,Oct. 23,—The move- j inent to stop ginning dominated trad inff in cotton today and caused ad- ' vaces of over a cent a pound from , the low levels, made around the open ing. Direct rising from 19.25 to 20. 35. The close was at net gains for . the day of 70 to 78 points. The opening was unsettled and for a while the tendency was to suggest under realizing from the long side. . ; Prices were carried 11 to 25 points under the close of yesterday before mlicu of a demand appeared. At first the news that Governor Parker would issue a proclamation calling upon the ginners of Louisiana to stop ginning did not have much effect on trading but later opinion began to form that it would mean great tightness in the spot department. The announcement said Governor Parker would ask the governors of other cotton states to issue similar proclamations. When the demand set in it swept the market clean of offerings and put prices 81 to 88 points higher than yesterday’s finals. A hopeful tone in English cablegrams regard ing the 'abor situation helped the rise to some extent. The close was firm. Cotton market closed firm at net advances of 70 to 78 points.
