Mrs. Anderson and daughter, Miss Orah, went to Mena last week. Mr. Peninger’s brother and niece and nephew are here from Fort Smith. Some of the people from Nunley attended the Christmas tree at Ran som Saturday night and report a nice time. Mrs.,Grimes of White county is visiting her brother, John Webster, and Mrs. Peninger of Nunley: also Grandma Webster, their mother, whom she had not seen for 20 years. Farmer. RUST RINGERS Mrs. Bert Miles of Mena is yis iting here this week. W. J. Neighbors of Koxton, Texas, is visiting his parents this week. W. D. Allen returned flora Sayte, Ok., where he has been looking for a future home. T. A. AHea and family spent Sunday with Mrs. Allen’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. Miles. The young people enjoyed a nice singing at the borne of Mr. and Mrs. Payne Sunday night. Several of the young people enjoyed a nice time at the home of Ed McKibbin Monday night. W. D. Allen and family spent Christmas with Mrs. Allen’s par ents, Mr. and Mrs. VVhisenant, near Ransom. Jim Neighbors and Miss Grady Waiter were married Monday at Mena, and will spend several day s with relatives after which they will go to Ft. Smith »o makt their future home. School Girl. Colley and son from near Cave, visited relatives near here last week. The Rocky Sunday school gave their superintendent a nice medal for a Christmas present. J. W. Hatton has one of the best schools in the county. Miss Viola Roberson of De Queen, visited the Winchell fam ilies Christmas day. The directors have wisely de dided to continue the school twc months. B. F. Cannon and wife had for guests Christmas day, James Cannon and wife of Og den. Hiram. COVE CATCHES. Charley McGowan came in from Eubanks, Ok., to spend Christmas with homefolks. Tad Cox had one of his hands bad ly lacerated by B. H. Barton’s cot ton gin last Saturday, which will keep him from work for some time. Mrs. E. C. Florence of Ft. V,*<rth, Tex., arrived last Friday to spend Christmas with her aunt, Mrs. T. P. Fulton. Prof. E. L. Goben has organized the Minstrel Amusement Company, and with the W. O. W. band went to Janssen last week and gave an enter tainment to a good house. Miss Bertha Dorn and Douglas Walker were married at the home of the bride’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. VA7 A I lm*n lout Qnrwlntr nvirl o vn now at home to their friends in Miss Maey Norris’ cottage, on the east hill. In spite of the bad weather and muddy streets the Presbyterian church was packed on Christmas eve by an enthusiastic crowd to witness the entertainment given by the pub lic school pupils and the distribution of presents from a heavily laden Christmas tree. A very pleasing program was rendered which was interspersed with good music by the W. 0. W. band. Prof. Goben acted as Santa Claus and his make-up was not only perfect, but he climbed out of a sure-enough chimney. It was a great night for the little folks. R. Goff and B. J. Spencer have pur chased the E. P. Foreham tract of 3 1-2 acres, just north of town, and in getting this property these gentle men have secured one of the most attractive and valuable pieces of land around the town. It has the natural foundation for an ideal fruit and poultry farm, and Messrs. Goff and Spencer will put it on the mar ket at the right kind of figures. These gentlemen now own about 1000 acres of land in this vicinity, and are still anxious to buy more at the right prices. Fisherman. WICKES WAVELETS. Luther Darwin of near Hope came in last week to visit with friends and relatives through the nonaays. Quite a number of young peo ple attended tbe musical enter tainment at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Caswell Saturday night. Frank Baker was the lucky boy in getting the $20 bedstead given away by Goff, Carter & Company December 24. A freight car wrecked just be low the Wickes depot Thursday, which caused quite an excitement, but no one was hurt. Quite a crowd enjoyed them selves at a singing at the home of Mr. and Mrs. C. G. Tunnelis Sunday night. Dock Henry and two sons, Reader and Reacy, left Monday for the Cossatct to spend a day or two hunting. Mrs. Jim Kuykendall and little daughter from Red Oak, Ok., came in Sunday night to visit wi h relatives. There will be a watch meeting at the Wickcs school house New Year s eve. Everybody come and watch the Old Year out and wel come the New Year in. Miss Nora Winfield and Robert Cverturf of near Gillham were married Thursday night at the home of her parents. Conn and other relatives. Bratcher Harris and sister, Theresa vere visiting at the home of J. S. Isman Friday and Saturday. S. I. Wood of Ink, gave a Christmas dinner Saturday. Among those present were, G. L. Harris and family, and Seiger Wood of Mena. Miss Maud King has relapse I with the fever and is very low at this writing. She has been down very sick for a month. Walter Howard and wife of Stigler, Ok., are visiting with Mrs. Howard’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. T. S. Embry and other rel atives. Hungate, Masters Glen and Earl left Saturday to visit at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Jonah Whan near Mena. Mr. Broomfield, who has been at Ottawa, Kas., came in last week to look after his property east of town. Mr. and Mrs. Melvin Dorton of Big Springs, Tex., spent Christ mas with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Russell Brown. Mr. J. E. Schoolz made a busi ness trip to the southern part of the state last week. He returned Christmas Eve. Patsy Mathis is with homefoiks for a week or two. She is stay ing with her sister, Mrs. Stoveall of Crowder Ok., and at tending school this year. M, Vinson and family of Atlanta, Kas., returned borne Saturday, after a week’s visit with Mrs. Vinson’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. John McNeil. Mr. Nat Black, who has been attending school at Oklahoma City, is with his uncle, Will Col tins, through the holiday vaca tion. Mr. W. F. Hogan of Highwood, 111., is with us again. He is im proving his property here in readiness for Mrs. Hogan, who will be here in about ten days. They will spend the winter in Grannis. The Baptist Sunday school had their Christmas tree and exercises, regardless of rain and sleet, and it proved a success. There was n full house, and the program was entertaining and well rendered. Senator and Mrs. J. P. Logan had the pleasure of entertaining at Christmas dinner all of their sons. Mr. Herbert and Roy of Texarkana, and Mr. Howard of Little Rock; also Mr. and Mrs Alex Coyle and son, Raymond, and Mr. Hogan were guests. M. E. D. M. RED BIRD NOTES. G. W. Miss Lettie Knight, our school mistress, dismissed school for a week and is spending the holidays with her parents at Black Springs. It is narated that the home of a certain well known farmer of the Slatington neighborhood is haunted—by Prof Virgil S. Fer guson. John Dilbeck went to Mena Wednesday, returning Thursday with a load of merchandise for the Sulphur Springs Mercantile Company. Our most efficient school board is due much credit for their time and expenditure of energy in their efforts to maka ihe building comfortable and the present term a prospering one. A number of friends were en tertained at the home of Major and Mrs. E. J. Henley Friday. A nice dinner, such as Mrs. Hen ley proves so well how to prepare, wus spread. It is reported that A. L. Smith, mail carrier at Slatington, met with an accident last week while the snow was on the ground that came very near proving fatal when his horse fell down crip pling both Mr. Smith and the horse. Mr. and Mrs. Mark Little of Maud, Ok., came in Sunday to spend a few weeks with friends and relatives. Quite a number of .friends sur prised Mr. and Mrs. Sam T. Bart mess last Thursday night and enjoy ed some fine music. The services at the Baptist church Christmas day were a success, and quite a sum of money was collected for the Orphans’ Home. Garrigan, who came t< Mena about six months ago wifi Mrs. Garrigan and their four chil dren, is very much pleased with th< results, as he believes had he re mained in his old home in Tennessee they would have lost their younges child, a 7-year-old boy, with asthma Mr. Garrigan says that Hubert the boy referred to, suffered great); from asthma in their Tennesse home, and he took him to differen places, as far as Montana, seekini relief. In the latter state he im proved in one way and lost in an other.
