Semi-Annual Letter. Roswell, N. M. Nov. S 6 Editor Times-Journal: I am writing you as usual from Roswell, tho little gem city of the Pecos Malley. I have been tied up by snow blockades on the railroads in the worse blizzard this country has ever known sp early in the win ter. About the depots and ho tels great crowds of emigrant home seekers gather around the stores and waiting rooms. White folks, Dagoes, Mexicans, and mixed breeds of all kinds and conditions, all bent on get ting a government claim, if it be only a barren waste of hills of sand and sage bushes. God pi-ty the poor when it snows. Huddled in their shant ies of rough plank, often Bxlo feet, are large families of these people who moved here last spring and started a government claim, and broke the sod for a future farm (all their own) with hopes of a mild winter to pull them through, but now comes 18 j inches of snow in November with no fuel for miles away. They shiver and die, and yet, I saw two thousand more come in this week in one day. Why will they leaYe the comfort of their native homes for the discomfort of a frontier life? Why? Because the spirit of American manhood delights in the conquering of dif ficulties, and building and devel oping a great State, against a seemingly impossible conditions. Arkansas has advantages equal, if not greater, than this country, and yet no train loads of emi grants cbme to us for homes or to fill our unoccupied lands and turn them into productive farms.' What is the matter? A customer of mine here here today tola me he sold $400,000 worth of mer chandise this year and there are others selling more goods than him. It takes people t o buy goods; it takes people to improve farms and raise crops. -Cant we ! get some of this great tide of ■ wealth producers turned our way. । Hot Spring county has fully 80 per cent of her land yet to be turned by the plow up to God’s sunshine. What will we d o । about it? There are thousands | who want homes. We have the : I lands to sell. Wholesale houses । send men to find buyers for their goods and retail merchants ad- I vertise, but our- lands lie idle and ' grow up in weeds and bushes be ; cause we make no intelligent es- , [ fort to get people to see and ap- ' j predate them. What will we do I about it? Hot Spring county i needs 10,000 more industrous farmers. I will be home about Christmas. Yours, S. O.
