New York, Jan. 5.a-Speeulative li quidation was renewed in the stocic market today with much the same appearance of urgency as on the op ening day of the New Year. There was no II per cent money ;nte to account for the weakness of tlie stock market and other nominal explanations Were advanced. Many of these bore an appearance of mere surmise, the outcome of efforts to pierce the mystery of the large sup plies of stocks for sale. The busie.. of these surmises center about Rock Island, its recent stock market his tory and the personal element con nected with it. Rumors flew thick aiiout the stock exchange today of the scope of power and itibueneea being exerted to make effective the desired disapproval of the Rock Island market management. Tire principal selling of the day was attributed to the retirement of specu lative commitments, which had been prompted by this disciplinary move ment. The course of events at. Washing ton divided attention with the hap penings within tiie fiscal district and were given their share of responsibil ity for the action of the market. hast prices were about tue lowest uf the day and the tone wa sacutel.v weak when operation® were concluded for the day. Bonds were easy. Total sales, par value, were 14,960,900. United States Is coupon declined ’/4 per cent on call. CHICAGO’S GRAIN MARKET. Chicago, Jan. 5.—Wheat showed weakness here today and corn also rcu orr. oats evidenced less change. Provisions were generally .owec. Persistent selling in the wheat pit prevailed despite much bullish senti ment and left all the futures weak at the close. Prices fell off at the opening am again just before the finish of the day l ailing, after the hulls had advanced ail the futures and forced May wlie® prices a shade higher than yesterday's final figures. Closing figures for July and Sep tember wheat were 5-8c to l-2c lower : espectively, than yesterday and these future, with May, exhibited a com paratively wide range. May spread over 1 to 1 l-8c, closing 3-4 to s-8c lower than yesterday's final quota tions, jit $1.13 3-4. There was a big trade in corn, but the close was weak. Activity cnaractorized the oats pti. A light run of hogs today in west ern packing centers, 57.700 being re ceived, as against 105,300 a year ago, had less effect than usual on the pro visions market here. January pork advanced 20* eaily, but as a result of profit taking the gain w-as lost. At the close the dlffeient future.) as com pared with jesterday’s final dosing figures ranged: Pork, 2 l-2c to 20c lower; lard 2 1-2 tci 5c lowcro nibs, generally, 7 1-2e lower. Closing prices in January products were: Perk, $21.80; lard, $12.60; ribs, $11.50. NEW ORLEANS COTTON. KT_ r O.W.4.^ Rim and closed steady, unchanged. Middling, 15 3-4o. Sales on the spot, 1,060 bales; to arrive, 300. Futures opened steady at the de cline, 11 to 13 points down. The mar ket was active all day and in the af ternoon sessions, when prices broke 53 to 84 points, the trading was sen -ation. This was one of the widest breaks since the Sully year. It was caused by bearish aggres siveness and weakness in the stock market in New York, which started unloading on a huge scale among me longs. Around the middle of the day the market, recovering from the de cline of the early hours, advanced 6 to 10 IK.ints over yesterday’s closing on reports of a good spot demand in the interior. In the last hour of trad ing the market went all to pieces, Rome months breaking 10 points at * time under the selling pressure. The close was weak at a net decline or 48 to 78 points.
