Kinney, 744 1-2 Central f h th. «— *»• b,;, ^ (Advt.) /* NEW YORK COTTON. New York, Kelt. 21.—A further de cline during the early trading in the cotton market today was followed by quite a sharp rally, but offerings be came heavier again toward the close, and lust prices were easy at a net loss of it to 12 points. The market opened at a decline of 8 to 18 points in response to disap. pointing cables, reports of a decline in the market for Egyptian cotton and bearish private cables from Liverpool indicating a lack of general confi dence there and a small trade. There was some pretty good buying around the owning figures here which includ ed support from trade sources and covering by near months shorts w-ho appeared to have been influenced uy reports that leading interests were preparing to take up a large amount of cotton on March contracts and ral lies of 6 to 7 points occurred from the opening figures. Following their execution the mar. ket steadied on covering for over the holiday tomorrow and with the assist ance of some little fresh buying for a turn based on Washington advices in dicating a better prospect for defeat ing the Scott bill, sold up several points from the lowest, or to within 5 to 7 points of last night's close. But there was no broadening of demand on the rally from 18.81 to 18.1»j for ■way, ana a renewal or scattering u. quldatlon or local selling sent prices off from the best at the close. South ern spot advices continued generally bullish with private wires reporting large sales at iNew Orleans, and the southern markets reported early were unchanged to 1-8e Inver; generally un changed. The market both here and at New Orleans will be closed tomorrow, while Liverpool will remain open. Roecipls at the ports today were 15,933 bales against 22.40S last week and 12,369 hist year. For the week, 110 bales a ainst. 144,848 last week and 83,515 last year. Today’s receipts at New Or.eans were 4,759 against 3,. 143 last year, and at nouston were 2, 636 against 3,511 last year. NEW YORK STOCKS. New York, Feb. 21.—Most of the favorite issues on the stock exchange were heavy today, although there were in evidence extensive bear pressure or liquidation. Traders were engaged so busily with securities of the Gould railroads that they gave little atten tion to the rest of the list, and It dropped through neglect. It was reca'leri that when George J. Gould’s approaching retirement as active head of the Missouri-PacifLi was announced, the intimation was conveyed that a change in the con. trol of the other Gould properties would probably follow. 'Missouri-'Pacifle, Denver and Rio Grande, St. Louis ‘Southwestern pre ferred, Texas and Pacific and Wabash common and preferred all made sub stantial gains. The market as a whole fell off, although there was some im provement at midday. The influence of the holiday was felt in the afternoon and trading was at a low ebb. In the final hour the market became more active at lower prices and the ' sing was heavy with slight losses in the usually active stocks. The bond market was strong in sympathy with the movement in the Gould issue. Total sales, par value, were $3, 358,000. 17. S. bonds were unchanged on call. Mrs. R. A. Cartwright has returned to the city after having been for about three years in Kentucky. Miss Edna Spencer, of Missouri, is in the city visiting at the home of Mr. and Mrs. David Reitier.
