i MARKET NEWS
NEW YORK COTTON.
■ New York, May 6.—The cotton
1 market was irregular today, but In
spite of considerable realizing for
I over the week end near months made
new high records for the movement,
i with the close very steady on the old
crops and steady on the new. net S
points higher to 3 lower.
The opening was styady at uncbang
i ed prices to an advance of 3 points
on bullish week.end figures. Favor
able weather reports inspired some
selling of the late months and after
the opening prices eased off to a net
decline of 3 or 4 points. and In the
late trading advanced sharply on hull
support and covering by Wall street
short. July contracts reached 15.48c.
or 9 points above the closing figures
of last night, and even with the high
record for the season made last De
cember. and around this price leading
bull brokers sold just enough to check
the upward movement. Old crop posi
tions closed within a point of the beat,
but new crops were 2 or 3 'points off
from the top, owing to the failure of
the western lielt forecast to indicate
rains ever Sunday It called for in
creasing cloudy and unsettled condi.
lions in Oklahoma, however, and with
the low barometer noted yesterday in
the northwest working southward
there was just enough uncertainty
over weather conditions to prevent shy
aggressive selling for short account.
Estimates or Monday's receipts at
leading points were heavier, but the
bulls idea that they foreshadowed a
bulge in the export, movement was
confirmed to some extent by the fact
that the amount of cotton on ship
board at the close of the week showed
an increase over last year. Domestic
trade accounts showed .little or no im
provement. curtailment of production
at Fall iR.iver being estimated at 150,
OdO pieces for the week. Liverpool
however. rei>orted a continued good
t rade.
Receipts at the ports today were
7.030 against 12,440 last week and 5,
739 last year. Today'.! receipts at Mew
Orleans 2 900 bales against 2.159 last
year.
NEW ORLEANS COTTON.
Mew Orleans, May 6,—The cotton
market was unsettled and irregular
this week. The weather was the
dominating influence. The net result
was an advance of 3 to 6 points on
the old crop months and a decline of
23 to 24 points on the new.
Favorable weather was a pressure
on the new crops. The high prices
were made on Monday, and the low
■on Friday. From the highest to the
lowest there was a drop of 22 to 49
points. At the highest the list was 7
to 11 points over last week’s close;
at the lowest it was 14 to 38 under.
In the early par1 of the week the
weather was not favorable and prices
were maintained at. the highest level
of the season, later weather condi.
tions took a turn for the better and
the market began to sag. Old crops,
however, were supported by specu
lative buying and by good trade re
ports from England and did not. share
fully in the decline made by the new
crops. Toward the close of the weak
there was a rally on the belief thnt
the crop had received a more serious
setback than at first had been thought
and that later planting in Mississippi,
Arkansas and Alabama would allow
more damage than ever from the bo'l
weevil. Reports from the belt were
conflicting. From many sections came
letters and telegrams stating that a
few days of warm weather would al
low the damage done to the crop to
he repaired, but from others the nd
vices were less favorable and said thnt
under the most favorable circum.
stances the crop would get a very
late start.
