St. I.oul8, June 15.—Two blocks
have been burned over and a num
ber of residences are threatened by
tire which started tonight in the
plant of Huttig Sash and Door Com
pany.
The damage already is said to ex

Alexandria. La., June 15.—Fire this
afternoon destroyed the sawnrw
planing mill and lumber yards of tne

DUEL CALLED OFF
Paris, June 15.—Regarding the re
port from Madrid that Alfonso Ruiz
de Grijalda, editor of the Diarlo de la
Marina of the Spanish capital had
'eft for the frontier and would fight
a duel today with Andre Tardleu for
eign editor of the Paris Temps, it was
stated at the Temps office this after
noon that no duel had been arranged.
According to the announcement
from Madrid, Grijalda had challenged
because of offense taken at >a politi
cal article published in the Temps
dealing with relations of France and
Spain in Morrocco. The encounter
was to be with swords and to occur
at Biarritz.
AMERICANS KILLED.
Two Murdered at Ensenada, Lower
California.
Washington, June 15.—Two Amer
icans, Dr. Foster and Patrick Glen
non, have been killed in Alamo, Mex
ico and Mr. Sawdat, the American
vice consul at Ensenada, in reporting
the fact to the state department, adds
that there Is dangerous turburlence
a Ensenada and that the Mexicans
causing the trouble were to a great
•xtent recruited in the United States

ized American citizens.
The state department had remind
ed the Mexican government that some
time ago it gave permission for Mex
ican troops to cross American terrl-*
tory for the restoration of peace and
order in Lower California and that it
is now depending upon Mexico to
make these outrages impossible.

Sullivan is one state senator that re
solved that the Woman's Suffrage
bill now pending shall have a fair
show.
‘Twenty years ago, when you gut
up In the morning all you saw was
men going to work with dinner pails,’
said 'Big Tim” to day. Now then
are Just as many women carrying
lunches. They are entitled to protect
themselves, and labor is entitled to
the protection of having their votes
ast and counted.”

Washington. June 15.—'Postmaster
General Hitchcock today designed
fifty additional postal savings banks,
making a total of 700 established to
date. Among the offices named to

MAINE EXPLOSION.
Damage to Battleship Was Greater
Than Anticipated.
Havana. June 15.—That the shat
tering of the hull of the battleship
Maine is evidently far greater than
supposed was revealed this after
noon as a result »f superficial obser
vation made possible by the lowering
of the water level in the coffer dam
a total depth of seven feet.
On account of this revelation all
plans for dealing with the ultimate
removal of the hulk have become
merely conjectural until more water
is pumped out. As the water re
ceded today every sccessive foot re
vealed a worse and worse condition
forward of midships. That part was
subjected to the main force of the
explosion.
The bow section is still nearly
twenty feet below the surface and
here It is believed the destruction
will be found to have been even more
complete

of a possible 25 was made by Burkett
