There is no longer question of doubt but that many Lits*« ficck In stitutions harbor, nourish and cnemn deep prejudices against Hot Springs. Some time ago Hot Springs did something for herself by making a comparison before the public as be tween Hot Springs and Little Hock. We showed to material advantage in the comparison, if the comparison had not favored Hot Springs we would not have made it. Little Rock chaffed and became eore. The effect of the- comparison must have been more wide spread than even we had anticipated, else It would have been lighter passed. A few years ago Hot Springs was the convention city of the state be cause it was und is yet the only city In the state really adapted to con ventions. Hot Springs is better, adapted to conventions in about eight months In the year than any other city in the South. Little Rock went after conventions vnen won money. ine people uiuo took Hie p;ay away trom us with tempting purses tor entertainment, and boasted of the victory. They offered “side trips to Hot Springs" which seemed to he sufficient in making us a side issue. Hot Springs never harbored pre judices. Some attention was calle to the situation, but Little Lock was putting up the money and getting re sults, and there seemed nothing to toe done but. remain the "side show” to the toig tent. We in Hot Springs always knew that Hot Springs was the best prepar ed for the entertainment of big crowds than any town In the coun try, but we bided our time, and it came. Now, if Little Hock insists in en forcing its prejudices to the detri ment of Hot Springs, we gently call attention to the fact again that Hot Springs patronage conies fro all ov er the world, and that we are the most independent city in the world. Hot Springs will be able to take care of herself in a business way, and incidentally may learn a lesson or reciprocity which will -bring us closer to our frifends and to make us know our enemies. Yes, there is no rival for Hot Springs except herself. But the split vote may remain split. After one prize contest comes an other. He who spurts and runs away, may live to spurt the Marathon way. (Next Tuesday is Good Roads day in Buckviiie, so don't forget the date. And, also, there will he a little clause on the ticket like this: (Vote for One). Balkan war clouds have ceased to alarm or he in any sense threaten ing. Make it an even dozen in the con stables race so it may he referred to a3 the dozen raw. As we Journey through life, it is sometimes very hard work to keep cool by the wav. ONE. andthendnd There is health and happiness and opportunity for wealth in Hot Springs —and what more could be asked? The Little Rock water supply and ♦he Little Rock sewer system were , too closely allied, according to that i report. 1 That Massachusetts Judge who has decided that "Man is boss of the house’’ must have troubles Of his own. I Of course, too, the city needed the money. Just as It will continue to seed the money until revenue is increased through some method. I (Garland county is dolngr* more now for the betterment of her roads than has been accomplished in year?, and J the refults will bs Btartli That aviation may become a col lege study Is not without the range of college poss Idlilies; especially as the word is given to speedy thoughts and acts. But from the small cities of the state there is echoed a sentiment favorable to the Arkansas State Fair, and the October exposition will »• a hummer. A Hot Springs man writes from a point West: "if Hot Springs peo ple would tell haT as many truths about Hot Springs as others tell falsehoods to boost their sections, it would be the garden spot of tho whole world.’’ It is significant that one of tho most persistent defenders of the highway commission is a man who tried hiB hand at road building and was removed for Inefficiency. “Corn leads In Chicago,” says a dispatch. Rye is still ahead in Dal* tlmore, with mint a close second, says the Sun of the latter city. Here it is famous malt-brews that have the call. There are many heat stories going the rounds, but we join with those who draw the line on the one where a most beautiful and talented young woman had her eyebrows burned off by the rays or a noonday sun. If Uncle Sam succeeds in divorcing the great rail coal-carriers of the country from their baby mines ho will have performed a miracle. WOMEN JURORS PROBLEM WHAT SHALL BE DONE WITH THEM IN FELONY CASES WHERE MEN ALSO SERVE. Law Requires All Jurors Shall Be Kept Together in Apartment Throughout All Felony Trials. tfpokane, Wash.. July U.-What to rto with women who will be called to serve as jurors with men when the Spokane county superior court con venes next September, is one of the vexing problems confronting the five mem Iters of the bench, headed by Judge Henry L. Kennan. The various clubs in Spokane have given out statements that their mem bers are ready and willing to do jury duty. The judges hope a modern Solomon or Portia will come forward to unravel the tangles presented by these possible situations: If 12 women are selected to try a case and six disagree from the other six. If four women decided they are right in a civil action uud six men jurors hold opposite views. If a mixed jury of men and women is kept together in a felony case un til ail are agreed upon a verdict. If six women ami six men are lock ed in a room to determine the guilt or innocence of a iierson charged with a capital crime? Kelatlng to service of jurors In the superior court the law adopted by the Legislature of 1P11, says: “Any woman desiring to be excus ed from jury service may claim ex emption by signing a written or printed notice thereof and return ng same to the sheriff before the date of appearance, and if exemption is planned by reason of sex, no fee shall be allowed for her appearance.” The law provides that the Jury sworn to try the issue in felony cas es shull be kept together and in cus tody of the officers of the court ei. eept during the aetttal progress of the trial, thug putting it squarely up to the Judges to solve the problem Bl owing the question to solve itself, il the women who desire to serve as Jur ors can not settle it themselves.
