■
g| This company has fortunately been able to secure the services of Professor Chas. Edward Draper, who is
without question the best posted man in this country on the proper use of gas ranges. Professor Draper is
now in the city and all the preliminary arrangements will • be completed for commencing these absolutely free gas
■ stove demonstrations today. He will demonstrate how to use a gas range, and those who attend will also learn many
■ things NOT TO DO which will prove very interesting and fully as valuable as what to do. Professor Draper
m claims that there is more food wasted in the baking than there is in the making. He explains how to bake and
cook on a gas range and how NOT to cook on a gas range. He also explains and demonstrates how very econo
‘ ’ mi cal NATURAL GAS RANGES are when properly used, and how to get the best results with the smallest
■ amount of gas. This Company has secured Professor Draper’s services at a tremendous expense to themselves,
■ since Mr. Draper had to come from Rome, New York to Hot Springs to conduct these demonstrations, which we
■ hope will prove to your benefit. Refreshments, angel food cake and punch will be served to the ladies each after
noon. The Grand Rapids Furniture Store will be the coolest place in the city during the. demonstrations and
attractively decorated with palms, ferns, etc. The Company has spared no expense to make this natural gas ,
range demonstration the greatest demonstration ever given in the state. Always in the fore to the interests of
■ their customers and the people, they decided on giving this series of free ESTATE NATURAL GAS RANGE
H demonstrations to dedicate the occasion and to welcome natural gas to our city. Don’t forget the dates. Every
^ t body welcome.

MAKES ANSWER
TREATS JEFFERSON COUNTY CON
GRESSIONAL AGREEMENT AS
A SUBJECT OF HUMOR*
Says the Preliminary Rate Will Give
One Candidate Exper ence, and
Open the Way for a New
Richmond.
Hon. W. H. Martin, candidate for
congress from tnis district, liad 1'is
attention called yesterday to ilhe poli
tical agreement !n Jefferson county
between ColoneJ Taylor and Judge
Gould, and wan rather Inclined to
treat the matter as a tinge joke. He
made a characterictic deduction of the
situation in the following authorized
interview:
"Yes, 1 observed in this morning’s
Gazette ttiai Judge Gould und Col.
Taylor have agreed betwixt them
selves. to hold a little primary of their
own In Jefferson county on Septem
ber the 12tn, to decide w'lhlch of 'hem
shall remain as Jefferson's candidate
for Congress. A sort of lriendty
'beauty contest' as it were.
“That is a little family affair which
ought not to be profaned by outside
interference. It's nobody eEse's ‘darn
ed business.’ But really, 1 cannot
perceive the practical utility of such
a movement. Of course I concede
that it does not require the statqp
of my approval or endorsement. It
does seem, however, as if this scheme
will be productive of no greater pro
gress than llhat of one wao travels fn
a circle.
“It Is proposed that the loser shall
retire from the contest. But Jeffer
son County is as full of congression
al timber, real and assumed, as the
pavement of a celebrated winter re
sort is of good intentions. They have
merry doings in dear old Jefferson
county, and are always contributing
in a substantial way to the gayety
of nations. They certainly will not
fail us now.
“When the loser in this little family
scrap is made known, you will neea
no ear trumpet to hear the call from
tilie faithful, ‘as these f^re let »thet*g
advance,’ and so the winner will find
new aspirants as thick as Richmonds
on the field of Bos worth.
“Whether this proceeding is quite
fair to the rest of the district, pre
sents an etnical question to be de
termined in the first instance by
gentlemen concerned, so far as they
are personally affected. Judge Could
and Col. Taylor evidently attach some
importance to tlheir little primary and
consider that the result of it will be
to really select the next Oongresa
man.
“That, with the prestige of having
defeated his home opponent, no otner
candidate can stand before his lance.
The other counties, however, might
feel slighted. That is, they might
believe they had a right to p«*rtici
pate in this selection, and mat the'
as well as Jefferson county ought to
be allowed a ;voice even between
the infallible Judge and tihe invin
cible Colonel.
“By the way, Isn’t it funny to speak
of any one as the candidate of any
particular county? If he is fit, what
does it matter where he hails from?
Certainly no one can justify a vote
for a candidate on the ground of his
being a county man unless he is at
least the peer of nis opponent. I sup
pose, however, that these Jefferson
county statesmen wish to practice
running a little before the real race
begins. They are both such fin® at
tractive gentlemen that it is a pity
the district is limited to one congress,
man.
' My own opinion Is that the Dem
Ar>PotU «• * •
-v-Buu.tHiif !«J! V UUftlt'HM »uUnf()
be the cnoice of the district at large
and ought not to be limited in their
choice by the action of any siugle
county.”
