The New York club is today leading the remarkably close lrennant race of tne National league. By winning an other contest from Chicago yesterda> the Giants took a jump of ftve points ahead of the visitors. Hard on the latter’s heels the Pittsburg team threatens, for notwithstanding loss to Philadelphia yesterday, Pittsburg is only six points behind Chicago. It is several years since three teams ran so close a race in tne National League. For the last ten years one of the trio now fighting for the first place has been a championship win ner, Chicago four tim«3, Pittsburg four times and New York twice. It was in 1908 that the Nationals had one or their closest races when New Yor* and Chicago required an additional game to decide tihe cnamplonship. With so slight a margin between tne three teams, now, it looks like a toss up as to which club will pmorso the winner on October 12. Chicago ends its last scries with New York in the East today anil crosses the river to Brooklyn, where Chicago has won but tnree gan.es out of eight this year.
