MARKET NEWS
NEW YORK STOCKS.
New York. Aug. 22—'Detailed re
cltal of todays operations on t'he slock
exchange wouhl hardly throw much
light on (he general financial situa
tlon. The market opened with k
number of substantial recessions in
■which Union Pacific took ills now
familiar place as leader.
In its early losses the list simply
followed the course of London, where
all Americans, particularly tne Har
rimans were under pressure.
(Further details concerning the Pro
posed retrenchment on the Harnraan
railroads were forthcoming, all tend
ing to show that this important sys
tem purposes carrying out its avowed
policy with little delay.
The labor situation on the Ullno t
Central, widen owes alleglaTTce to tu*
Harriinan lines aiso was reported tc
have became acute.
An estimate of t'he North Dakota
wheat crop places the probable bar
vest at 80,(10(1,00(1 bushels against 36,*
060,000 last year. Dispatches trom
Oregon, Montana, Idaho and Wash
Ington point, to enormous yields in
these states.
Honda were steady; total sales, par
value, amounted to $1,216,000.
United states government bonds
were unchanged on call.
NEW YORK COTTON,
New York, August 22.—It was a
very quiet day in cotton and prices
fluctuated irregularly within a range
of about “ten points on active new
crop months. August was relatively
tirin, probably, as a result of covering
by belated sliortB and closed ten
points net Higher, while new crop
positions were net unchanged*to two
points higher with the final tone o'
the market steady.
The opening was steady at a de
cline of 2 at 6 (joints and during the
first few minutes active positions sold
from five to eight points under tne
closing iigiires or last night under
scattering liquidation* local bear pres
sure and selling by Icoding trade
interests, which was supposed to be
in I he way of hedges, owing to tne
increasing new crop movement.
The action of the market suggested
that existing accounts were being ev
ened up and that fresh business was
being restricted by the approach ot
trie government s September condition
report, regarding which the trade
evidently feels considerable uncer
tainty owing to the conflicting char
acter of private crop accounts.
Keceipts today were 17,027 against
!>,;m mst week and 12,;i»4 last year.
Today s receipts at New; Orleans 1,163
bales against 11,847 last year and a’
Houston 8,188 aaginst 5.728 last year.
PURE FOOD EXPERTS.
Day’s Session Devoted to Soft Drinks
and Nuts.
Duluth, Minn., Aug. 22.—loday’s
sess'on of the convention of the Na
tronal and Stale Pure Food Fxports
was mostly consumed with .the pre
sentation of an exhaustive-report on
re-organization of the association anil
by a discussion of so-called ’’soft”
drink Ingredients and their alleged*
habit forming propensities.
It was declared by various mem
bers of (he association that a free in
•lulgence in a majority of soft drinks
offered by (he drug and small shop
trade is naving a dangerous effect up
on the nation. Citing a case in par
ticular, one delegate claimed that a
college youth required several glasses
of a certain beverage morning, noon
and night to maintain an equitable
nervous system. Some of the con
coctions, it was claimed, contained
serious quantities of cocaine and cat
feine.
Placing old nuts with new, and
selling the mixture as first class was
frowned upon hy one commissioner and
especially was the alleged system of
oioring pecans with acids declared
bad for (he consumer, inasmuch as the
acids permeates the nut.
