The Sixth Annual Arkansas State
Fair has passed Into history, and its
success i»l beiiiR everywhere meas
urey favii|iubi.v in comparison not
alone with former fairs here, but with
others hod iu this section of the
South.
A satisfied pride is worth a whole
lot.
Hot Springs undertook this sixth
annua! exposition under diiucnittes.
There was a time when the shadows
hung .heavy and wlo-n it was doubted
If the ,1*11' i ouJd be maintained by
Hot Springs alone and uuul.led.
Hot Springs^ has answered 'that
aiiuntiou.
The Arkansas State Fair in Mot
Springs le a fixture, Just so long «»
the people of Hot Springs uesire !'
to be eueh.
Oifthi^lei* have been overcome.
When the association asked the logls
tiatnre tff appropriate a sum of money
to he paid to the counties of Arkan
sas for premiums on county exhibits,
and met rebuff before that legislative
body, things looked bad.
When a few big mercantile ,lous
es who sell tbougandg bf dollars
worth of merchandise In Hot
Springs every month refused to make
exhibits/ fct omr T*»ir» that incident
was discouraging.,
When the chief executive of the
state ignored an invitation to attend
the opening of the fair and give It
that state-wide recognition that, the
inctden' would have establishe 1, the
fact was observed.
There were nmuyf discouraging fea
tures in connection with the manage
ment of the Sixth Annua-i Arkansm
State P'alr. j
But there we|pt also encouraging
features.
Harry If. Wostcott, a new citizen
In Arkansas and in Hot Springs, but
already the most distinctive typo oi
unelfish citizenship to which we can
point, came on the scene.
W'-stcott had pride, and ambition,
and knew no such word as fail. He
accepted the presidency of the state
fair association, not wheat aiuccess
was crowning its history, but in Its
darkest, hour. P'on. abcu‘ spven
months he has labored for the public
weal at. no other man ever tailored
in this state, and as few have ever
labored in this country.
Others have worked hard for the
success of the fair,' b"t they inci
dentul.y worked for pay they receiv.
ed. Westcott not, alone does run
receive one dollar in remuneration,
but if his modesty could !>e over
come, it is probable that a g ante
at ilia oauk book would show that
*»■ successful state faU^ hast cost
him, J2,.')00. Probably more.
Harry M. Westcott Is worth more
to Hot Springs and to Arkansas than
a 'legislative appropriation or a gub
eyusatorial influence. 1 example
will live long alter hindering inci
dents are forgotten.
The future of the state fair is be
lug discussed. .No man can say
what it will be—but this is assured:
Harry M. Westcott isj pf stiff Iciem
force in himself to encourage out
peo|»e Into continued support of tie
institution. By another year we may
have some changed conditions local
ly. We may have a little more au.
thority to give the president of the
Arkansas’ Slate Fair. We may re
move gome of the hinderances that
have had to be overcome in this las'
fair.
We are proud of the Sixth Annua
Arkansas Skate Fair. We are proud
of Harry M. Westcott. We art
proud because we did something tha.
no other city in Arkansas would bavt
undertaken under the circumstances.
We are proud because at. the criti
cal moment in the history of tin
state fair, when it had to be aband
oned or undertaken, it was under
taken, and moulded into success.
Arkansas ia winner through this
stale fair. Gar and county always
profits largely from the state fair.
Hot Springs has its reward in profit
and pride.
It takes time to work changes, ill
takes time to remove the scales from
the eyes of the people. It takes tine
to awaken a people into the oppor
tunity that lies before them. It takes
time to make appreciation properly
felt. And so long as progress Is
being marke 1 in affairs there can al.
ways be indn'ged that hope that the
ultimate end will be crowned with
the success that unselfish labor de
serve*.
Now the Sixth Annual is history.
The roorback will, prove a kick,
hack.
Well It was bigger and better than !
the others.
Now haul down the trappings, and i
hack to business on the o>d scale.
Montgomery an! Garland counties
want political peace from the shot
of the gun.
Who Hal,li Hot Springs couldn’t fin
ance a state fair?
Anyhow, the district agreement
didn’t have anything to do with tin*
selection of a congressman.
Also we will have some goings
round and round in Garland county
politics within a short {I me.
The bird with a selfish grouch or
a selfish en |. to serve usually gets
the attention his complaints merit.
The Republican leaders a»e said
to l>e praying that the tunnel ‘<ie,
not. cave in while the campaign Is on
Men who helped to make thiB state
fair what It was wtM also help to
make a community what 3t should
he.
Any movement towards an amica
ble agreement between (larland and
Montgomery counties will be approv
ed by the voters, and: Ha terms
abided by the fair democracy.
When a sheriff has kept down
thievery attendant on the gathering
of a big crowd like attended the .stale
fair, he has done something for
which to he proud.
At the hour of going to press the
big trunk lines which serve the
world's greatest health resort were
MM handling the peop'e better than
similar lines in other parts of tne
country.
The Iron Mountain Rat''road, the
Rock Island Railroad, and the Busi
ness Men’s League nre triumvirate
Interested more In the welfare of
Hot Springs than all the little selfish
wallers.
The League might give the story
the He that travel is unsafe into Hot
Springs. And statistics might prove
the League's* stand.
And If Montgomery county is satis,
fled, the rest of us ought to be tick
led pink, whether we are candidates
for congress or not.
Thef return of S. <E. Dillon, to take
charge of the pit bile utilities service
corporations of Hot Springs, will h<'
greeted with unanimous applause.
Fite removal fromj this city «i few
wars ago was a marked >oas.
The All-Stars seemed to have ov
erlooked the fact that the Hon. Ed
ward Collins of the Philadephia team
Is something of a star himself.
The McNamara brothers do not
want any delay In their trials. That
Is where they differ materially with
some other peop’e who are in trou
ble as a result of the collapse of a
building.
