I CONTAINS NO MERCURY AND NO POTASH L PARK PAVING IS UPSET BV FLOOD HEAVY RAINS TEAR OUT WOOD BLOCKS ON SOUTH SIDE OF STREET FOR TWO BLOCKS. AI»o Much Damage Occasioned By The Very Brief But Very Heavy Downpour Yesterday Morning. One rain, not long In Its duration, but n real "ground soaker and gully washer" while it lasted, upset many plans and calculations on Park av enue yesterday, and Incidentally made the wood block paving work just completed a question unan swered, instead of a happy solution. On the south side of the street for about two blocks, and particularly where the short streets from the mountains entered into Park avenue, the wood block paving w'as picked up and shifted o down the street with the flood of water that was carrying everything movable. ICarly after the rain the commis sioners und t heir forces were out picking up the wood blocks from the path of the small flood and the work of restoring the pavement will he taken up as soon as possible. The most serious part of the mut ter is that if this paving washed out with that rain of yesterday morning, what assurance is there that it will not he washed out repeatedly. Park avenue is not properly drained ami the city administration would have done more work there previous to the paving but for the fact that there was no city revenue with which to work. The paving was not all the damage occasioned there, for yards were flooded, chicken coops washed out and away with their con tents, some fencing washed away, and other small property damage. The property loss as to the paving work will be the loss of the contrac tors, said Mr. Sorrells yesterday, who is superintending the construction. It is also stated by him that the wash out of tlie wood blocks was caused by the water removing the sand from be tween the blocks, and not through any other cause. When the blocks become more firmly set, lie did not think there was much liklihood of a recurrence of the loss. He cited as proof of this that those parts of the paving laid earlier had not been dam aged. lull where the most recent pav ing was laid the sand between the blocks was loose, washed out, and the blocks floated out and down the street. , _ MISS WILSON OF ARKANSAS.
